Jane Claire has already made an indelible mark on the Austin scene as the founder of BossBabesATX, but a recent connection with (iN)Sect Records founder Butcher Bear has resulted in a powerful statement in the form of Sour Grapefruit, a four song EP featuring Claire‘s songwriting prowess positioned on the production of Exploded Drawing all-stars Reaganometry, Out of Place and kinder. The project is a reflection on embracing the nature of life and leaning into it rather than attempting to adjust what is to fit your idea of what it should be, be that relationships, identity, or any other elusive aspect of life that we all face. This project is definitely a strong one, and hopefully, it will result in a follow-up LP at some point with production from other members of (iN)Sect Records‘ extensive roster (or any other producer, for that matter).

In October of 2017, Austin (by way of Nashville) hip-hop crew Out of Place dropped their latest project, A Collection of Sounds. The album is not only a celebration of their collective nature, it is also an ode to collaboration, as a handful of solid MCs find their way onto the project. Guest verses from Love Space, Wick-It The Instigator, Denice King, Tenci and Ufulu Child bolster top notch production from the crew (plus guest production from Loot Tester and Lucky Punch). The thoughts shared are complex, but presented in a way so easy to relate to that you realize you more than likely share many of the same lines of thought. Although this was a 2017 release, I recommend checking this out as a good way to get your 2018 going.

(In)sect Records artist Multi-Tracker recently put out one of the doper electronic albums I’ve heard out of their camp, the genius Code Switching. The homie Butcher Bear recently told me of his plans to have different MCs contribute lyrics to the different tracks (I’m jones’ng to get my voice on one or two of these myself). old news (HIT) is the opening shot off this next step in Code Switching‘s growth, and MC Out Of Place sounds totally at home on this one.. dig it and dig it good.
