Apparently, I completely missed the boat on an album that the homie Scuare released about six months ago. Here’s the skinny on the project, straight from Exociety :
“Scuare is a Brazilian-American bedroom rapper/beat maker based in Austin Texas. His intricate flows and melodic tendencies have earned him a small but dedicated following as a member of the duo …&more… and internet rap collective Exociety. In the years since Alphabet Soup, his first solo release, Scuare has steadily evolved a style that is unique to himself.
Phenomonal, almost entirely self-produced, recorded, mixed and mastered, is Scuare’s first solo LP since 2013. Loosely playing off themes of the phenomenal and noumenal world, he illustrates the shift in his thought process; from obsessing over internal analysis towards considerations beyond his own frame of reference, to the world of motivations and perspectives that exists outside his own limited understanding, with the hopes of leading a more empathetic and positive lifestyle. Joined by frequent collaborators no1mportant and Rav, as well as instrumental additions from FLOOG, BlkPwRngr, and Sow, this project marks a new chapter in Scuare’s discography.”
The work is definitely dope, so do the main things : stream the album, download the album and share it around. Because the beautiful people at Exociety care about us as consumers, the album is a name your price download, so if you’ve got a few bucks to spare, make it happen!
The way that the internet has made our massive world figuratively ‘smaller’ has allowed for collaborative possibilities that, even a generation ago, could not have existed. The story of the EXOCIETY collective perfectly illustrates this, as the ultra-talented Austin-based MC known as Scuare has shown us. About a decade ago, he connected with non-TexansRav and Kill Bill over the website Newgrounds, and a bond was formed that has lasted despite proximity and time. With each member growing and the world changing drastically since their inception, it makes sense that SKIN would reflect this range of change, despite it’s semi-short runtime. Each member provides production, along with fellow collaborator Gold Midas, on the project, which takes a deep dive into the realms of creativity and sonic exploration. I could throw a bunch of adjectives around, but this one deserves a direct listen, as it is quite gripping. Check it out on Bandcamp or your favorite streaming service, and spread it around for others to do the same.
Another dope music video has been released for one of the many dope …&More… tracks that exists. This go round, Ndelible Ink lent a visual hand for Faces Places, and the end product will most certainly occupy a space in the depths of your mind. The setting is rustic, the juxtaposition between the presentations of Scuare and no1mportant are pitch perfect, and the main track is bookended by two of the instrumental tracks off of Existence Is Futile. You’ve heard me say it before, and I’ll say it again until it happens.. how are these cats not signed or at the next level yet? Don’t sleep, Austin, and maybe you’ll be lucky enough to say you’ve been down since day one when these cats eventually blow up.
During the days that Soundcloud was cool, Austin-based MC Scuare took it upon himself to go 18 weeks, one song a week. Like most, he has moved on from Soundcloud, but that did not make those creations any less relevant. After realizing that most people had no access to the lion’s share of that material, a decision was made to compile all of the songs into the project Off Days Vol. I. It’s a free download, so why would you not cop it? Your only obligation would be to tell a friend to do the same, and believe me, your ears will thank you for it.
With so much talent in the Austin hip-hop scene, it’s amazing that we don’t see more producer-led projects featuring the best of their MC affiliates from track to track. Ruler Why comes to mind, and I’m sure I’m forgetting others, but the numbers aren’t as high as they potentially could be. Retr05pect, however, looks as if he’s attempting to skew that data with the release of the rock solid project The Real Estate Sessions, a project rooted in the discovery of a 45″ record collection at an estate sale. The production throughout this project is top notch, as one would expect Retr05pect production to be.. it’s paced well, the skits provide just enough breathing room between song groupings, and the choices for MCs were right on the money. You’ll find some of my favorite people on these tracks : Click-Clack, Muggzy Flowz, Scuare, no1mportant, Rudi DeVino, and Black DaVinci all spit quality bars and concepts. I’m looking forward to keeping this one heavy in my DJ rotations.
OVRLD‘s The Hot Conversation podcast is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite podcasts out there, local or otherwise. The latest episode contains almost the perfect storm of ingredients and topics : Protextor and JRo (as per usual), Scuare and no1mportant (…&more…), and topics ranging from DVD rot to racism in the Star Wars universe to Star Trek color shirt significance to sexy Prince posters, and all kinds of fun stops in between. This had me laughing so hard at work, I had to make sure to keep the laughs down. Great stuff.
