Definitive Statement :: Royal Minus And Same Dfrnc Connect With Ruler Why For ‘Conclusive’

Royal Minus is getting prepped to drop a metric ton of Ruler Why produced heat on us, and I’m ready.  The first single, Conclusive, features a guest verse from Sam Dfrnc, and the two lace the guitar-driven track with a verbal onslaught that true heads will certainly enjoy.  This is the kind of hip-hop that gets you amped up, makes it hard to sit down and relax, and makes your neck sore from the headnods it induces.  A burner for sure, and if it’s an indicator of what’s in store for The Regalia, it appears that all of us are in store for some straight dopeness.  Check out the track, share it around, and leave a comment on your favorite line!

Primal Scream :: MC Homeless Drops ‘Not A Human’

MC Homeless has never been one to shy away from his industrial and hardcore roots, even while affixing himself firmly within the world of hip-hop.  While many of his recently released songs and projects wade in the pools of the aforementioned genres, Not A Human is a deep dive with cement boots into both of those worlds.  On top of jarring and aggressive production (in the best ways possible) from Death Woods, MC Homeless unleashes a torrent of a statement about being more than your average man.  This one is definitely for those tired of hearing the same old, run of the mill hip-hop and rap, and I’m totally on board for seeing him do this live in the near future.  Check out the track, share it around, and drop a buck or two when you download it, if you can.

Visual Visionary :: Gost Gets Esoteric On ‘Views’

As long as I’ve known Gost, I’ve known him to be a man with a vision.  He’s always been one to make sure his lyrical craft is sharp, but he’s also a fiercely dedicated and loyal person with hopes of bettering not only his position in life, but anyone else in his sphere that’s real and willing to put in the work on their end as well.  With Views (an unofficial ode to the late Nipsey Hussle), Gost lays out the gameplan, with a little extra incentive to encourage those with dreams to let them know with hard work, they can manifest into reality.  I’m all about seeing Gost get to that place he often speaks of, because he certainly will have earned it when he arrives.  Check out the track, leave a comment on your favorite bar, and share it around so others can be inspired to make their dreams reality as well.

Today’s Math :: RoyalKingMinus Drops ‘The #’s Vol. 3’

San Antonio-based MC RoyalKingMinus reached out to me recently to see about some shows in the San Marcos and Austin area, so I did what I do and got him in touch with cats I knew were active.  Then I did something I need to get better at, and asked him what his latest releases were, and GOOD GOD am I glad that I did.  RoyalKingMinus has been hard at work on what he calls The Numbers Series, a series of EPs that deserves a deep dive based on the brief but brilliant The #’s Vol. 3, or at least that’s the case in my experience.  The off-kilter production and rhyme delivery, heavily referential and smart lyrics, and the vocal samples that tie it all together had me wishing for more, and lucky me, there are 3 other entries in the project to check out.  I recommend you do the same, and if you’re in the central Texas area, keep an eye out for RoyalKingMinus later this summer.

Summer Vibes :: The Kid Crio Drops ‘May Weather’

Austin-based artist The Kid Crio hit me up recently to let me know about May Weather, the Kydd Jones produced track he recently released, and I’ve gotta say that it’s a nice change of pace.  The Kid Crio sets aside rapid fire bars for a more stream of consciousness type of flow full of lyrical references, positive affirmations and observational statements, all of which are delivered with energy and enthusiasm.  The track bangs as well, but with Kydd Jones on the production credit, that’s a given more often than not.  This one will definitely make a mix or two, and it’s certainly worth checking out… leave a comment, and share it around so others can dig it as well.

Power Moves :: Protextor And Willie B Talk Shop And Play ‘TMNT : The Hyperstone Heist’ On ‘Rappers Playing Games (RPG)’

Rappers Playing Game (RPG) recently sat down with Austin local hip-hop legend Willie B over a game of TMNT : The Hyperstone Heist (keeping in line with TMNT Month for the show), and the two had quite the interesting conversation.  Topics as diverse as the chemistry of the TMNT team, Willie B‘s numerous creative projects, his musical journey, influences and more are all touched on.  (RPG) has gone from being a good idea to a wonderfully insightful bit of programming, and it improves with each episode, so if you’ve not done so already, definitely subscribe to Baby Lion to be in on the ground floor when new content is released.  As always, leave a like or a comment, and be sure to share this around!

High Rise :: BlackLight And Aline Align For ‘Skyline’ Video

BlackLight out of Austin is on a mission to prove that you can be successful without compromising your vision or integrity, and up to this point, he is making all the right moves.  His latest music video, the visual love letter to Austin that is Skyline, features he and singer Aline pontificating on manifesting your vision, making money, and keeping your head to the sky in an energy-filled track.  The visuals show a lot of the usual downtown Austin suspects via drone footage and artistic dutch angle shots, and the parking garage performance echoes one of my favorite eras in hip-hop.  I’m definitely all for this creative streak that BlackLight has been showing, and I hope it resonates for quite a while.

Statement Raps :: Levi Deadman and MaxMilly Talk Culture On ‘Dead Wrong’

Austin-based artist Levi Deadman is one of many who finds himself at an impasse due to the cultural divide that hip-hop currently faces.  On the one hand, in hip-hop almost more so than any other genre, change is inevitable.  On the other hand, we cannot let that change be at the expense of the foundations that have been laid.  With that in mind, Levi Deadman and MaxMilly found a way to have a foot in both worlds without having to give an inch for their stance or in regards to how they feel about the culture.  MaxMilly drops a hook that many of the young guns would kill for, while Levi Deadman drops a style reminiscent of the popular late-1990s Midwest flow that artists like Twista and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony made popular, all over a bone-chilling track that is equal parts horror score and hip-hop banger.  This is how you can make a statement without causing a further divide, and for that, I must give Levi Deadman all the props he deserves.

Ripple Effect :: Ben Buck Making Waves With ‘McNasty Was Here’ Video

Ben Buck most certainly embodies the Austin aesthetic, and his video for McNasty Was Here cuts right to the heart of that matter with its two main elements : weirdness and live music.  Director Gravy Jones cuts between live footage and material that looks like B-roll from a skate video to perfectly capture what a day in the life of Ben Buck must feel like.  I’m not the man, so I can’t speak for him, but to my knowledge, most days entail kicking it with his crew, being creative, making music, and whenever the chance affords it, jumping on stage to further the legend.  Definitely check out the video, give it a like and a share, and leave a comment for support!

Throwback Vibes :: PNTHN’s ‘Megatron’ Video

PNTHN is back at it again, which is a good thing, because their music video game has been strong since day one.  For Megatron, the crew goes for an older vibe, dusting off the late 1990’s aesthetic to the fullest.  All of the earmarks are there : donuts in the parking lot, rapping in an abandoned warehouse, fire in a barrel, dutch angles, tons of crew, and even aged video all add to the quality and feel of a song with strong energy as a foundation.  Henriques definitely did his thing visually, and PNTHN did what they do, making the result one that speaks for itself.  Dope, for sure, and has me ready for more.
