Gayatri Shakur was the jam when I first posted about it, so it brings me great joy to announce that Emcee Eats and STORMSHADOW decided to lace us with a visual element for this jam. Not only did these guys make a great looking video (both in terms of production value and location), but the approach matches the lyrical energy perfectly… meditations on self in the midst of real world interaction. While that may not be the message of the track (or even their intent), I picked up that vibe heavily from the track/video combination, and it makes me that much happier to share it with all of you. Check it out, leave a like and a comment, and share it around so others can do the same!

When it comes to instrumental projects, certain things stick out to me… dynamic range, a variety of sounds and styles, well-chosen and well-placed samples, and even those intangibles you can’t identify until you hear or recognize them all come into play. For my money’s worth, SK the Greatest seems to be well aware of these aspects, as his latest project, Dopamine, manages to tick all of those boxes in an economic but memorable 9 tracks. Be it the Public Enemy-esque The Education (Intro), the ominous darkness of Forbidden Flute, the layers of guitar under synth found in Wobbly, or any of the other memorable moments that the Austin-based beatsmith put together in the project, it’s most certainly a strong one. Props to GMGOmusic for putting this out… definitely check out SK the Greatest and the other artist on the Bandcamp site, and encourage others to do the same.
If you want bars with depth and inspirational content, look no further than Emcee Eats and the company he keeps. He recently enlisted fellow enlightened MCs StormShadow and SK the Greatest, and over an SK production, the trio has created Gayatri Shakur, a song that my words cannot serve proper justice for. The best thing I can say about this track is that it is sure shot listen material, and will soon become a member of my DJ set regular rotations. Dig this one and dig it good.
The ability to turn samples into sonic gold is a gift worth treasuring, and it’s clear that GMGOmusic representative SK The Greatest treasures his gifts to the fullest. Signature Sounds is an incredibly solid collection of instrumental musings, ranging from boom bap to jazzy, thought provoking to head nodding, and all points in-between. There are some great DJ moments, vocal chops and so on sprinkled in, but the lack of MCs on this project is incredibly refreshing, due to the fact that these beats all stand up on their own. Worth your time, worth your money, and worth spreading the word about.
