Life Experience :: JMac The Dragon And Crew Experience ‘The Human Elements’

San Marcos, just like it’s big brother city Austin, is showing a wealth of creative and talented folks on the verge of making a name for themselves in 2017.  JMac the Dragon‘s recent release, The Human Element, was a wonderful exploration of the ups and downs of our daily walk, and the video for the title track is a wonderful piece of art that reflects the sentiments of the album.  Featuring a host of guest verses from Aye Cue, Frank Villa and CA the Commoner (who also directed the video), this track and video are instant classics.  Dope for real.

Sound Champion :: NickNack Demonstrates How To ‘Watch The Sound’ With Beat Junkies

As a high schooler newly discovering Austin‘s long history of live music, I met many heads that I continue to keep in contact with to this day, nearly 20 years later.  One of those heads I first met on the scene was NickNack, who in the late 90s was already a well known DJ and a vital part of the hip hop scene.

As the years have gone by, NickNack has done nothing but grow.  He’s developed Crowd Control Records, released several albums as both DJ and producer (a role he has also excelled at), and played more gigs than many of us can fathom.  Recently, The World Famous Beat Junkies invited him to be a part of their Watch The Sound series, which he of course destroyed with a plethora of his wonderful toys.  Dig it, share it, like it, and support local!

Bars Deluxe :: Ciggy Burns Celebrates ‘Sweet Morning Lights’

Raw raps.  That’s what the Boom Bap family is all about.  The latest from the collective set to wreck eardrums is Ciggy Burns, and Sweet Morning Lights, the lead single off of the upcoming EP The Slow Burn, is one hell of a warning shot.  Do yourself a favor and listen… get hip quick.

Leap Of Faith :: Ignite’s ‘Skydive’ Music Video

Ignite is an Austin MC, by way of Louisianvia a California detour.  The experiences in his life and the places he’s lived clearly have provided Ignite a unique view of the world, and a unique vision that he brings to his approach.  Skydive mixes cinematic snippets of everyday life while sprinkling in tips for successful living on both the bigger plane and the daily walk.  Very solid song, and that hook will stay stuck in your head all day.  Good stuff.

Raw Deluxe :: 36″ Wheels Drop ‘Spit On It’

San Marcos has produced a thriving scene of musicians that have seamlessly blended the folk, bluegrass and punk aesthetic into a sound so natural it’s surprising it is not a thriving sound already.  One of the frontrunners of this scene is the raucous outfit known as 36″ Wheels.  Last winter, they hunkered down in the studio, and the result is their debut release, Spit On It.  Done in 2 days of broken strings, fighting through illness and leaving it all on the studio floor, this project is one that will remain with you long after the last notes of the last song have faded, and it will certainly enhance your experience of their live show.

The Evils :: Smackola Promises ‘A Better Me’

The weight of the world can drag even the strongest man down.  An inherent part of closeness is trust, and trust is a delicate balance to maintain.  On A Better MeSmackola examines what it takes in order to navigate through a world that seemingly does not care, and his examination results in a simple statement : bettering yourself will aid you in your daily walk.  Wise words as always from a true living legend.

Dream Sounds :: Elnuh’s ‘Bad Week’ EP Moves The Soul

Diversity of style and sound is plentiful within the central Texas area.  One of the many thriving scenes is the lo fi pop music movement, almost dream pop (if you will).  San Antonio-based singer/songwriter elnuh, a member of many collective musical projects, is making a standout effort with the recently released bad week EP.  The only thing that is remotely negative about this is the want for more once the last notes fade.  I will certainly be keeping my eyes and ears open for more.

Tight Team :: New Episode Of ‘Welcome To Your Doom’ Focuses On Dynamic Duos

There’s a hot new episode of Welcome To Your Doom fresh off the press.  This time around, Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice‘s wandering eye focuses on dynamic duos in the Texas music scene.  The variety is deep on this one, so take a moment to tune in to some good underground music from some up and coming artists.

Funky Combinations :: ‘French Cuff Sleazy’ Live With The Triggermen And Ben ‘McNasty’ Buck

Last fall, The Triggermen released their latest album, Live Wire.  To celebrate its release, they threw a dope show at Beerland.  I was honored to be a part of it, and that night was my introduction to Ben ‘McNasty’ Buck.  His set was incredibly captivating, and then later that night, he took to the stage with The Triggermen for French Cuff Sleazy, and the results were fantastic.  The Triggermen were in the midst of capturing footage for their Party Pro video, and this was a pleasant bonus that has now been shared for the masses.
