Shared Vibes :: Omenihu’s ‘All Vibes Matters’ Gets Love As It Spreads Love

You’ve gotta be open to the universe and the signals it sends you, because you never know from which direction the love may come.  Austin-based rapper Omenihu‘s latest release, All Vibes Matter, is a prime example of this, as it recently was shown major love by the blog curators over at OkayPlayer.  The song is dope, the video has a nice aesthetic to it that will make it hard to place its direct timeframe when it’s rediscovered way down the line, and a co-sign from the homie Delano Taylor on Facebook doesn’t hurt either.  I really enjoyed this song… a nice positive button for the end of this trying year.

Holiday Jams :: Wild Child’s ‘Christmas Mixtape, Volume 1’

A few years ago, Austin-based outfit Wild Child took to their home with a Tascam recorder to capture some holiday cheer in the form of covers from a list of fan requests.  Enter 2016, holiday season, and Wild Child has decided to bless us with not only a downloadable version of the Christmas Mixtape, Volume 1 project, but with the inclusion of a new b-side.  This is really the kind of gift that keeps on giving.

Lucid Dreams :: One Who May Ascend (OMA) Drops Visuals For ‘Comatoast’

One who May Ascend (OMA) has taken up steady residence on a list of artists to keep an eye out for in 2017.  Several of his videos have crept up on my radar this year, and they have all made an impression.  Comatoast is no different, and this one takes a direct look at depression and the onsets of what some would dub mental illness.  As a fellow creative type, I can certainly understand how difficult your daily walk can be when you’re constantly in such heavy and varying emotional mindstates.  This video does a good job of capturing the feelings that are so hard to express in anything other than songform.  Much respect to OMA for having the skills and foresight to use the music video medium to its full potential.

Vox Stimuli :: Perseph One’s ‘Still Tippin Onslaught’ Video Blows Minds

Tons of work and collaboration went into Perseph One‘s video for Still Tippin Onslaught, the lead single off of the Machine Mammal EP, and it shows.  Ilea Henderson and David Ngyuyen shared directing duties.  Linda Cornflake curated art, while ARTICLE provided the track title burner for the video.  Donnie Walt curated the artists.  Shelby Hohl handled the lettering effects in the video, and Ronald L. Jones dropped the glitch assist.  Everybody you see gathered in the now-defunct Lost Ward House to provided the proper setting for the video’s mood.  This one hits hard in all the right places.

Whatever’s Natural :: Sip Sip Slays ‘Dangerous’ At Sofar Austin

In a city with the sheer numbers of bands in it such as Austin, it’s quite common for there to be similarities between bands.  What’s rare is when a project comes about that is truly unique.  Sip Sip is certainly not the only band double digit numbers of members on the stage.  They’re not the first band to bring brass or synthesizers into the equation.  But I’m hard-pressed to name another band that sounds like these guys, and has as much fun as these guys, while doing what they do.  Sofar Austin recently allowed them to get down, and Dangerous is a prime example of the quality performance and dynamite vibes you get at a Sip Sip show.  Spread this one around the way these cats spread musical love.

Anybody who knows anything about Texas underground hip-hop within the past decade or so has more than likely at least heard of Perseph One.  She is one of those rare breeds of female MC where the female classification is an afterthought to the massive amounts of skill and forward thought she brings to the table.  Unbeknownst to myself, Perseph One has found her way to the mutual homies at Fake Four Records, and her Machine Mammal EP is now the week 2 offering for their annual Freecember promotion.  I am proud of her, happy to see my homies pick up such a skilled artist, and excited for the future of their union.

After several months of brainstorming and planning, I am proud to announce my latest creative venture.  Welcome To Your Doom is a webseries I am creating/curating, and it will be an attempt to move my tastemaker status into the YouTube realm.  Each episode will focus on a different topic… some specific to my hometown of Austin, and some specific to people/places/practices I have been a part of over the years.  Episode 001 is a focus on the street art of Austin, with pieces I have found online focusing on the Hope Gallery, Jason E, Mike Johnston and REST.  Hopefully this series will continue to grow, and everyone out there will allow me to guide them through my influences and experiences.  Thank you in advance.

Sound Expansion :: Evan Moran’s ‘Romantic Feelings’ About Future Funk

It’s been documented several times on this blog that Evan Moran is not afraid to explore the boundaries of his creative energy.  Recently, he has started a journey down the road of future funk (think vaporwave, but at a higher bpm).  He’s knocked out a couple of songs already, but romantic feelings is his first foray into the visual accompaniment realm.  All of the earmarks of the genre are there… synth sounds, obscure samples from decades ago, and glitchy video from a random source, but Evan puts it all together like he’s been doing it for years.  While I hope this is not a departure from the other music he makes, I am excited to see where these journeys take him.
