Soothing Sounds :: (iN)Sect Records Presents Usedtobe Self-Titled Release
A bit of information on Usedtobe, courtesy of our friends at (iN)Sect Records :
Chris McDowell; aka Solar Shield (Austin Boogie Crew) aka Very Rich (Growth In Decay); is now also known as Usedtobe,
Usedtobe came from long nights in art school in Georgia. I had finally gotten the Mirage to actually read the floppy discs it came with, sitting on an endless pile of sampled drums from the internet, with the DX7 and Mopho and no plans outside the house. I was digging deep into the question of ‘what counts’, with file names like isThisFunk? and maybeEnough.
His debut long-player consisting of Boom Bap 90s beats, modern funk sketches and soul flips clocking in at 36 songs and 50 minutes. At 32, he’s been making music for over half his life under different monikers. He also owns a synthesizer company called supersynthesis.com, a musical instrument design and manufacturing firm based in Austin, TX, where he was born and raised. He plays drums, bass, guitar and is absolutely blessed on the keys.
For this record, the equipment he you used: Yamaha DX7, DSI Mopho, Ensoniq Mirage, Ableton Live, the web at large.
This one is money. Check it out, support if you can, and share regardless!

Spectrum Analysis :: Cunabear Shows Wonderful Range With ‘Yawning Towards Heaven!!!!’
For most artists and creatives, the last thing that you want to do is limit yourself in terms of expression. As therapeutic as creating art and music can be, it is infinitely more rewarding when you allow yourself to expand beyond the limits imposed on you by others (or yourself). Enter Savannah, Georgia-based cunabear, an artist who clearly understands and adheres to the practice of not limiting himself in terms of creative expression. Yawning Towards Heaven!!!!, his latest release (produced by sp00ks), wonderfully shifts between abstract instrumentals, experimental boom-bap hip-hop, spoken word over sparse instrumentation, and a handful of solid posse cuts featuring labelmates such as SB the Moor, BigStupidIdiot, Gomec, the homie Virgil Wolfe, Creative Space Cadet, MugWampers and four_circles. Most everything I’ve heard from BearTooth Collective has been good, but Yawning Towards Heaven!!!! plays very much like a deeply felt personal statement. Props to cunabear for putting out a true gem for heads to take in.

Scary Hours :: Cunabear Presents ‘Sidequest 01’
Virgil Wolfe has proven to be not only a man of considerable talent, but a man of good taste as well. If he recommends a piece of music, it is definitely not meant to be taken lightly. When he recently posted about sidequest 01, a project from Savanna, Georgia-based cunabear, I was so fascinated by the cover art that I had to listen. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. The music is as textured and mysterious as the album cover, and the beats take you to some very distinct places in regards of mood. Definitely top notch work.
