Alpha Music :: You F. Oh Drops ‘Beginning’ On The Masses

As I have come to realize my position in the way of things as a blogger, different aspects of my daily life start to bring new pleasures.  One cool kickback from the exposure the blog is starting to garner is that discoveries are now often initiated by creators, rather than my searching.  You F. Oh from Austin is one of those prime examples.  My phone made it’s little beep noise, and in the email was a Soundcloud link and a request to check out the music, courtesy of a visit to my site.  Since I was on the road, I threw it on the stereo, and damn was I pleasantly surprised.  Esoteric and thought provoking lyrics over unique/strong production?  That’s what it’s all about.  And for a debut project, Beginning shows nothing but promise and possibilities.  Thank you, You F. Oh, for getting me hip, and believe my eyes and ears are open for whatever comes next.

Lofi Escapism :: Kal Continues His Adventures In Lofi Production

Another one from lofi aficionado kal (also known as Evan Moran in some circles).  As he gets deeper and deeper into this production, a strength and sureness is emerging that emits beyond the low key nature of these songs.  Keep these bad boys coming!

Shared Experiences :: The Digital Wild’s ‘Wait’ Video Captivates

Yet another amazing music video in 2017 from the Austin music scene.  This one is from the trio The Digital Wild, and 2016 was all about growth for them.. as they stride into the new year, Wait shows further maturity in songwriting, production that pulls  you in even further, and a video that could sit among many of the videos getting high level rotation currently, or even in the heyday of music videos.  Bonus props to the homegirl Torrie Blake for popping up in yet another music video.  So many stars on the rise these days.

Real Talk :: The Hot Conversation Brings In Space Camp Death Squad

OVRLD blog stays connected to the Austin music scene in a major way.  One of their many offshoots is the Protextor and JRo of #LeagueDJs driven podcast The Hot Conversation.  And, ‘in a stunning act of nepotism’ (direct quote), this episode features the always entertaining Space Camp Death Squad.  I’m happy to have discovered this podcast, and I’m definitely ready for more.. maybe one day you may even get to hear Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice on it, if I’m lucky..

Inner Visions :: DdotElles Laces ‘Tiny Rick (Kid A)’ Single

DdotElles, as most everyone knows, is a man cut from my own cloth.  Rarely do you meet a cat who comes from not only a similar set of musical influences, but a similar set of film and literary influences as well, and isn’t afraid to show it in the lyrics.  Tiny Rick (Kid A) drops so many non-sequitur references among its two verses that the majority are more than likely to fly over most folks heads.  What they add, however, is an immediate deeper connection for those familiar, and future enjoyment to be released on future listens for those not yet up to speed on the context.  Songs like this are what make hip hop, as well as Austin‘s highly skilled set of MCs, a beautiful thing.

Propaganda Jams :: Clean Plate Club And Batsauce Create ‘Rumors Of War’

I thought that when Batsauce dropped his collection of beats for the Clean Plate Club, that was going to be it.  Then, like an RKO out of nowhere, a video dropped for the 2 part beast Rumors of War.  The video uses one of my favorite methods of music video styling (public domain/newsreel footage), and while it pulls from a 1960’s aesthetic, the visuals and song are still quite relevant.  Powerful stuff, worth your time, your likes and your shares.

Life Experience :: JMac The Dragon And Crew Experience ‘The Human Elements’

San Marcos, just like it’s big brother city Austin, is showing a wealth of creative and talented folks on the verge of making a name for themselves in 2017.  JMac the Dragon‘s recent release, The Human Element, was a wonderful exploration of the ups and downs of our daily walk, and the video for the title track is a wonderful piece of art that reflects the sentiments of the album.  Featuring a host of guest verses from Aye Cue, Frank Villa and CA the Commoner (who also directed the video), this track and video are instant classics.  Dope for real.

Sound Champion :: NickNack Demonstrates How To ‘Watch The Sound’ With Beat Junkies

As a high schooler newly discovering Austin‘s long history of live music, I met many heads that I continue to keep in contact with to this day, nearly 20 years later.  One of those heads I first met on the scene was NickNack, who in the late 90s was already a well known DJ and a vital part of the hip hop scene.

As the years have gone by, NickNack has done nothing but grow.  He’s developed Crowd Control Records, released several albums as both DJ and producer (a role he has also excelled at), and played more gigs than many of us can fathom.  Recently, The World Famous Beat Junkies invited him to be a part of their Watch The Sound series, which he of course destroyed with a plethora of his wonderful toys.  Dig it, share it, like it, and support local!

Bars Deluxe :: Ciggy Burns Celebrates ‘Sweet Morning Lights’

Raw raps.  That’s what the Boom Bap family is all about.  The latest from the collective set to wreck eardrums is Ciggy Burns, and Sweet Morning Lights, the lead single off of the upcoming EP The Slow Burn, is one hell of a warning shot.  Do yourself a favor and listen… get hip quick.

Leap Of Faith :: Ignite’s ‘Skydive’ Music Video

Ignite is an Austin MC, by way of Louisianvia a California detour.  The experiences in his life and the places he’s lived clearly have provided Ignite a unique view of the world, and a unique vision that he brings to his approach.  Skydive mixes cinematic snippets of everyday life while sprinkling in tips for successful living on both the bigger plane and the daily walk.  Very solid song, and that hook will stay stuck in your head all day.  Good stuff.
