Bonded Souls :: Fum Fum Ko Release ‘No Sleep No Breaks’

hqdefault

Austin-based director Fum Fum Ko‘s long awaited film collaboration with blakchyl and chiclopz of Mindz of a Different Kind (MDK) is now available and streaming on Facebook.  No Sleep No Breaks is a heartfelt story of two creative spirits excited about an opportunity to document their art, and the anticipation of this opportunity.  The film is set against the backdrop of East Austin (mostly), showcasing an area of the town that does not get the love it deserves.  Definitely give the film a like and a share, check it out, and let Fum Fum Ko know what you think about it!

Rebel Music :: Secret Levels Goes Off With ‘The Game is Never Over’

a4167564762_10

I’m all about innovation in hip-hop.  I don’t think we should be chained to production and performance tropes, and I find the divide in tastes emerging between the last few generations disturbing.  That being said, I love hip-hop that is rooted in the elements that brought it to the status that it has achieved today, and it’s apparent that Secret Levels feels the same way.  The Game is Never Over is drenched in the boom-bap aesthetic, and while dropping tons of homage to days past, the album never sounds dated.  Think Ugly Duckling with a bit more bite to it, or a linear evolution of what Pharcyde was doing.  Period point blank, this is an album that should be in your rotation if you care at all about supporting the Austin hip-hop scene, because this is high quality work.

Moving Pictures :: The ‘Against Shadows’ Trailer Intrigues

While combing through my timeline (as ususal), I stumbled across a trailer for an upcoming dance-based film, Against Shadows.  What immediately caught my eye was the backdrop for the thumbnail : the soon to be relocated Hope Outdoor Gallery in Austin.  Upon further research, I discovered that Stephanie Patrick and team’s vision was to do 5 scenes involving 10 dancers that takes place in both Austin and San Francisco.  A second video provided a bit more insight into the project…

I will definitely be on the lookout for this one.

Fine Tuning :: Kydd Jones Drops ‘Brand New’ Via Kitsuné Hot Stream

If Kydd Jones doesn’t blow in 2018, I will be extremely surprised.  Over the past couple of years, he has honed in on a sound that is definitely working for him.  He is able to make music that fits in with the mainstream artist output while being able to remain true to himself and his artistic drive.  Brand New finds Kydd spitting bars about making moves and rising to the top even when those around you seem to change with a revolving-door level of frequency.  With a co-sign from Kitsuné Hot Stream, this one should definitely see some traction.  Don’t forget, however, to give it a like, a share and a comment, for the sake of Austin hip-hop.

Beyond Measure :: Cha’Keeta B Releases ‘2Incomparable’ EP

Screenshot_1

After a successful video release last year for 2 Can Play That GameAustin-based emcee Cha’Keeta B steps into the release realm with a new EP, 2Incomparable.  Cha’Keeta B does a wonderful job of laying down empowering thoughts and observations with supreme confidence and delivery.  The production is on-point throughout the project, and guest appearances from Cat CarterLakreaNubia Emmon and Alesia Lani help round out the empowerment stance found on the album.  Cha’keeta B reminds me of newer female emcees such as Rhapsody, no doubt, but her voice is also reminiscent of Neb Luv from The 5 Footaz, both in her rhyme schemes and timbre.  This is definitely a strong way to start 2018… be sure to listen, share and support Cha’Keeta B in this venture, and always give props to your local artists.

Branching Out :: More Eaze Lays Foundation For ‘Hard Fun’ Record Label

0012430033_10

Austin-based experimental folk artist More Eaze seemed to spend much of last year making efforts to branch out and explore new ideas, new roles and new connections.  After a handful of releases to round out 2017, More Eaze has opened 2018 with the creation of a new record label, Hard Fun.  Strictly digital (for the moment), the label’s initial group of releases shows a solid diversity right out of the gate.  Dane Rousay‘s of SIRI is a free-jazz experimental monster… Bear Club‘s Waking Up The Light covers the pop and indie rock spectrum… and two collaborative efforts from More Eaze (a split with real life rock and roll band and a pairing with Derek Rogers) round out the inauguration day catalog.  Knowing the love for music that More Eaze has, I am excited to see what comes of this label.

Master Crafting :: Bern Ichus Goes Public With The Beats On ‘Yasuaki’

Screenshot_1

As 2017 came to a close, Austin-based MC Bern Ichus (one half of Homeroom) made it clear that he was a man obsessed, and had plans for expanding his repertoire.  Already forever hungry for beats to feed his rhyme-writing output, Bern invested in an MPC and immediately went to work.  In a relatively short time, he seems to be getting comfortable with his tools, and after roughly a month he is going public with beats.  The first, Yasuaki, is incredibly textured and mood driven for an early composition, as if it did not need lyrics to exist and would be fine as an instrumental piece.  I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Bern Ichus as he becomes a more confident and skilled producer, because I know for certain that his love for hip-hop will shine through, regardless of what he does.

Overly Dedicated :: ‘No Sleep No Breaks’ Coming Soon

Those in tune to the Austin hip-hop scene are well aware of MDK (Mindz of a Different Kind) and all the moves they’ve been making over the years.  Blackchyl and Chiclopz have teamed up with Fum Fum KO productions in an effort to express the essence of what they’ve been doing in the form of a short film.  No Sleep No Breaks, from the looks of it, may serve to be an honest look at what it’s like to devote your heart and soul to the culture while still struggling to maintain from day to day throughout the worldy madness and obstacles.  This is one that I am very much excited about, and hopeful that it gets the attention it seems to deserve upon release.

Powerful Nostalgia :: Total Sound Group Direction Action Committee Footage From Trophy’s Surfaces

Anyone unfamiliar with the legend of Tim Kerr (especially anyone native to Austin) has some homework to do.  From Big Boys to Lord High Fixers to Total Sound Group Direct Action Committee and more, Kerr has left an indelible mark on his city, punk/rock music, and art as a whole.  Recently, Butcher Bear uncovered some footage of a Trophy’s on South Congress show, and decided to upload it to (in)Sect Record‘s YouTube channel.  As a result, all of us have been blessed with the raw power than was Tim Kerr and his bandmates, and their extremely passionate sound.  Enjoy, share, and let the nostalgia of a simpler and better time take you over.
