Home Adventures :: Om Wahs Drops ‘Fogwall’ Single

a1084190551_10

If there is one thing that is plentiful in Austin, it’s rock bands.  They come in all shapes, sizes and genres, which makes it hard to cut through the noise.  What helps is discovering your niche, carving it out, and excelling at it, which Om Wahs appears to be on the  path to doing.  Fogwall, a new single released in anticipation of an album this spring, comes on with the strength of a Tame Impala or Deerhunter, making the fact that it was recorded in a bedroom that much more impressive (not bad company to keep, seeing as those artists started out doing a similar method of recording).  I love myself some psych rock, and Om Wahs has definitely made my watchlist.

Straight Talk :: The Mic Fiends Visualize ‘Precision Poetry’

When The Mic Fiends step up to the plate, you know you’re getting some quality factors in the rhymes you are receiving : knowledge, wordplay, confidence and experience just to name a few.  With Precision Poetry, we find the pairing kicking rhymes casually around Austin as well as at one of the final Strength In Numbers events (shout outs to some of the local talent and promotional heads making cameos in the video).  The rhymes are real, from the heart, and extremely meaningful.  Props to DVZN Media for knocking yet another music video out of the park.

Shifted Dynamics :: Kelene Blake and Da’Shade Moonbeam Reflect On Austin Gentrification

Some statements speak for themselves.  Black, Brown, ATX is a short (but heavy) dose of reality about the shifting populations of Austin over the past decade or two, and the damage it causes in the foundations of some key Austin neighborhoods full of rich culture and history.  Much love to Kelene Blake for voicing things, and Da’Shade Moonbeam for visualizing it.

Shared Experiences :: The Digital Wild’s ‘Wait’ Video Captivates

Yet another amazing music video in 2017 from the Austin music scene.  This one is from the trio The Digital Wild, and 2016 was all about growth for them.. as they stride into the new year, Wait shows further maturity in songwriting, production that pulls  you in even further, and a video that could sit among many of the videos getting high level rotation currently, or even in the heyday of music videos.  Bonus props to the homegirl Torrie Blake for popping up in yet another music video.  So many stars on the rise these days.

Inner Visions :: DdotElles Laces ‘Tiny Rick (Kid A)’ Single

DdotElles, as most everyone knows, is a man cut from my own cloth.  Rarely do you meet a cat who comes from not only a similar set of musical influences, but a similar set of film and literary influences as well, and isn’t afraid to show it in the lyrics.  Tiny Rick (Kid A) drops so many non-sequitur references among its two verses that the majority are more than likely to fly over most folks heads.  What they add, however, is an immediate deeper connection for those familiar, and future enjoyment to be released on future listens for those not yet up to speed on the context.  Songs like this are what make hip hop, as well as Austin‘s highly skilled set of MCs, a beautiful thing.

Life Experience :: JMac The Dragon And Crew Experience ‘The Human Elements’

San Marcos, just like it’s big brother city Austin, is showing a wealth of creative and talented folks on the verge of making a name for themselves in 2017.  JMac the Dragon‘s recent release, The Human Element, was a wonderful exploration of the ups and downs of our daily walk, and the video for the title track is a wonderful piece of art that reflects the sentiments of the album.  Featuring a host of guest verses from Aye Cue, Frank Villa and CA the Commoner (who also directed the video), this track and video are instant classics.  Dope for real.

Shared Visions :: Cha’keeta B. & Jake Lloyd Explore ‘Forever Love’

And yet, another high quality song and video coming out of my beautiful hometown of Austin.  This one is by Cha’keeta B., with an assist from Jake Lloyd.  The song and video for Forever Love share what it can be like to be on the same wavelength with another soul.  The good times are better, the creative energy can be shared, and the presentations to the world can be much stronger.  This one came heavily recommended by many of my musical peers in Austin, and this was a pleasant surprise, and further proof that our scene can hold one another down when it matters.

Future Vision :: Smackola’s ‘Glass Sky’ Video Is One For The Ages

Austin-based hip-hop legend Smackola has been doing his thing, regardless of the times, for slightly over 2 decades.  His approach to music and the experiences it has afforded him allows the type of perspective found in the song and video for Glass Sky.  The concept of both the song and video are brilliantly executed, and have me very much excited to discover what else lies within Smackola‘s latest release, The Thomas Brookz Project.  As always, expect nothing but quality from Smackola and anything Dirty Wormz affiliated.

Under Deconstruction :: More Eaze Releases ‘w0rk’

a1714355314_10

Austin, for what it’s worth, has built itself a respectable scene for electronic producers and musicians.  For most any shade of that spectrum, you can find someone to represent your tastes.  Enter more eaze, a self-proclaimed producer of ‘collage based work and the deconstruction of song forms’.  This is definitely a lofty and unique title, but on w0rk, we find that more eaze is quite capable of standing up to the gravity of the title he has appointed himself.  This work falls somewhere between Brian EnoMatmos and Captain Beefheart, all run through a digital strainer.  If you’re looking for something to change your way of thinking about music, this is not a bad place to start.

Shared Vibes :: Omenihu’s ‘All Vibes Matters’ Gets Love As It Spreads Love

You’ve gotta be open to the universe and the signals it sends you, because you never know from which direction the love may come.  Austin-based rapper Omenihu‘s latest release, All Vibes Matter, is a prime example of this, as it recently was shown major love by the blog curators over at OkayPlayer.  The song is dope, the video has a nice aesthetic to it that will make it hard to place its direct timeframe when it’s rediscovered way down the line, and a co-sign from the homie Delano Taylor on Facebook doesn’t hurt either.  I really enjoyed this song… a nice positive button for the end of this trying year.
