Dedication Game :: HeirMAX Celebrates MF Doom’s Legacy With ‘MAX DOOM Mixtape’

Hip-hop is still suffering from the loss of MF Doom, one of the most prolific producers and celebrated lyricists to ever represent the culture.  Many people have gone the route of making dedications in honor of MF Doom, and the Fort Worth-based MC known as heirMAX is among those people with his recent mixtape release MAX DOOM Mixtape.  The brief 3-song offering features known instrumentals from MF Doom and Madlib with new lyrics provided by heirMAX.  If you’re up for a bittersweet trip down memory lane, then this one is definitely for you… check it out, download it (and donate if you can), and share it around for all who loved MF Doom to enjoy.

Proper Praise :: Riders Against The Storm (RAS) Drop Video For ‘Flowers For The Living’

The adage of ‘give me my flowers while I can smell them’ has become an ethos that is gaining rapid popularity, as many people often find themselves regretful when it becomes too late to give someone the praise that they deserve.  It is quite possible that this new cultural awareness may get a boost in the form of Flowers for the Living, a song as self-explanatory as it is catchy.  Chaka and Qi’Dada bar up the Ayma-produced track (as they are known to do) while Clarence James shines on the hook, and thanks to director @JustinHCinema, the track is given a colorful and vibrant visual counterpart full of the life that it celebrates celebrating.  It may be a little early for a summer jam, but if this track ends up having some legs, it’ll definitely serve as a proper candidate due to its immense amount of feel good vibes.

Self Props :: Progeny Taps Robust For ‘Misunderstood’

Based on early indications from the music-making homies, 2021 seems to be all about knowledge of and care for self.  With the world seeming like an aggressive influence on a near daily basis, it is important that we as individuals learn to find strength and confidence from within, and this is demonstrated and displayed perfectly by Robust over a banger of a Progeny beat.  If you need a little sonic pick-me-up during any rough patches you may encounter, this is definitely a track to keep in mind.  Dig it and dig it good, download it if you can afford to donate a buck, and share it around for others to enjoy!

Protecting Legacy :: DotdotDotdotDotdot Gets Heavy On ‘Thyme And The Space Oddity’

The homie DotdotDotdotDotdot is always good for compelling, thought-provoking music, and it appears that he has something major in store for listeners in the near future.  In order to set up this upcoming release, he recently dropped the single Thyme and The Space Oddity, a collaboration with CecilBDDotDotdotDotdotDotdot uses the epic beat as a platform to discuss the importance of legacy, being self-driven and not being deterred by criticism from peers and critics (while giving hints about how hearing them is still a good practice).  DotdotDotdotDotdot has always been a calculated cat, and he has clued me in to the bigger picture, so I am very much excited to see how it all develops.  While the rest of you wait, go find this latest track on your favorite streaming service or digital storefront, and support your local creatives!

Always Rocking :: MAD1ONE Starts 2021 Strong With ‘Dark Side Of Jupiter’ Release

San Antonio hip-hop has always been dope, and one of the dopest representing the city is the formidable MC known as MAD1ONE.  After a busy 2020, it’s no surprise that MAD1ONE would be right back at it first of the year with new material, but unlike the majority of his recent releases, Dark Side of Jupiter finds MAD1ONE exploring different energy in much more contemplative, introspective rhyming without the usual intense presence backing up the words, and all over lush production from Blazy Green.  It seems like spreading wisdom and reinforcing personal affirmations is more important this go-round than self-gratifying talk (not that MAD1ONE has ever dropped self-gratifying rhymes solely for the purpose of personal enjoyment).  If you’re looking for hip-hop that will positively shift energy, then take a moment for Dark Side of Jupiter, support it by copping it if you can, and spread it around for as many people as possible to hear.

Week Ender :: Kydd Jones Closes Out The Week With ‘Harpoon’ Release

Generally, I try to listen to tracks before I post about them on my blog, but in the case of Kydd Jones, his track record of quality material has earned him the right to get the auto-post.  This blog entry is serving as more of a reminder to myself to check out his new single Harpoon this weekend, but since I made this personal to-do list public, why not go ahead and check it out for yourself?

Fantastic Four :: Two Weeks Notice (Mikal kHill + Tribe One) Finalize #FREEcember With ‘A Calm, Measured Response’

from the digital desk of Fake Four, Inc. and Mikal kHill

Two Weeks Notice was originally proposed by Tribe One (Niles Gray) in 2015 in the same way most of my duo projects have started… we were doing shows together constantly and started hyping each other’s sets and eventually decided we should just create a project that way.  Niles is known for taking an incredibly long time to write, once spending literally 16 hours agonizingly rewriting the same 4 bars at my kitchen table, but we managed to create our first album in two weeks, while simultaneously booking the tour.  Ceschi asked us to create a Freecember release a few years ago and we had already been working on two LPs off and on since 2015 so we knew we had more than enough material.  Once again, though, we found ourselves scrapping everything we had in advance and ground out 6 new tracks on the spot for our first Christmas-Day release as a duo.  I think the result is an EP to speaks to our isolation in the age of COVID-19, our lives as fathers and husbands and also as two emcees still at the top of their game, over some of my best production.  Thanks for listening.”

Funny Games :: DC4PREZ Drops Video For ‘KEY & PEELE’

Alternative hip-hop artists in the central Texas area that are smart seem to be hitting up the homie Jeffrey Garcia for music videos, and the results have been nothing but gold.  The latest collaborator, DC4PREZ, recently dropped his video for KEY & PEELE, and the duo cooked up a colorful video full of life and slacker irreverence.  The track is ridiculously catchy, bouncy and radiating vibes, so having a visually stark companion-piece for it does nothing but enhance the enjoyment and experience.  Dig the video, give it a like, leave a comment, and spread it around so that the numbers get run up!

Connective Tissue :: BoomBaptist Drops ‘ZoomBaptist’ Single

Is BoomBaptist already working on a new project so close to the powerhouse that was Boom Shakalaka?  Is he just messing around in the moment, similar to his recent release COVID The Earth?  Did Boom mess around and find some gold while in a session and decide to bless us with a one-off track?  I don’t have the answers, but that won’t stop me from sharing ZoomBaptist with everyone.  Cop it if you can, share it around regardless, and get hip to BoomBaptist quick, because it feels like this is the beginning of a new wave of content.

Absurdist Swag :: Kenny Casanova Strikes Again With ‘BP Oil Spill’

If (or more likely, when) Kenny Casanova blows up, I wouldn’t be surprised if he continues to collaborate with Jeffrey Garcia on his music videos, because these crazy little masterpieces work extremely well for the vibe that Kenny Casanova has created and embraced.  His offbeat and unique approach to modern day hip-hop has found a perfect visual match with the random hilarity of Jeffrey Garcia, which makes BP Oil Spill one of many collaborative videos from the duo that jump out of the crowd of normal music video tropes.  You’ve probably already hit this one with a like and a comment, maybe even already shared it, but do all of those things immediately if you’ve not already done so, and don’t sleep, because if I was a betting man, I’d bet more of these wild creations are on the way.
