Self Props :: Progeny Taps Robust For ‘Misunderstood’

Based on early indications from the music-making homies, 2021 seems to be all about knowledge of and care for self.  With the world seeming like an aggressive influence on a near daily basis, it is important that we as individuals learn to find strength and confidence from within, and this is demonstrated and displayed perfectly by Robust over a banger of a Progeny beat.  If you need a little sonic pick-me-up during any rough patches you may encounter, this is definitely a track to keep in mind.  Dig it and dig it good, download it if you can afford to donate a buck, and share it around for others to enjoy!

Perfected Patience :: Apaso And Progeny Connect For ‘Sorry Not Sorry’

a2028547451_10

As 2020 rolls around, it’s crystal clear that San Antonio has no intentions of slowing down the output when it comes to hip-hop music, especially that which is produced by Progeny.  After dropping a new Chisme project, Progeny finds himself sharing the spotlight once again, this time with San Antonio heavyweight MC Apaso via a collaborative EP titled Sorry Not Sorry.  Over the course of the past 8 years or so, the duo collaborated on a series of tracks, and after testing the waters with the Chingona video, the pair have unleashed a solid effort via Sorry Not Sorry.  The production is dark and textured, providing plenty of sonic output for head nodding, while Apaso‘s smooth and assured delivery fits right in naturally.  This one is rock solid, so don’t sleep on it.  Check it out, share it around for others to do the same, and support if you can by purchasing!

Comeback Kids :: Chisme Reconnects For ‘Still Breathing’

a3705978771_10

Not that they were ever actually ‘gone’, but after putting in work on individual efforts across a handful of states, Progeny and R.E.L. better known as Chisme, have put together their highly anticipated 5th release, Still Breathing.  While focusing on the aforementioned efforts, the two found time to travel and connect over the past couple of years to continue creating, and in all honesty, their individual growth has resulted in a collective sense of pride and confidence that jumps out of the speakers at the listener.  I can’t wait to see these cats start performing some of these tracks, as the album energy is infectious, the lyrics dance around the textured tracks, and anyone not nodding their head is either fronting or deaf.  Dig it, share this one around for others to do the same, and support your local creatives!

Sky Captain :: MAD1ONE Hits The Internet Again With ‘Invisible Kingdom’

a3917268049_10

For the last few years, you know you’re good for about two releases from MAD1ONE, and with the second half of the year cresting and running into the final portion, it makes sense that he’d release Invisible Kingdom, a collection of hard-hitting, mostly high energy songs from the San Antonio-based veteran.  The production line-up for this one is insane : Four LimbsDJ GonzRuler WhyKizerSBVTKFurthermoreProgenySultan Mir and Mikey all contribute to the stellar sounds that MAD1ONE eloquently professes on.  This one is another strong notch in his belt, so don’t sleep on it… check it out, share it around, and if you have a few bucks, make a donation when you download, as every little bit helps.

Loca Summer :: Apaso, Kree 23 And Aimsta Drop Visual For ‘Chingona’

Strong character and an independent spirit are a good look on anyone, but as a young man, that goes double for me when present in a woman.  Apparently, Apaso and Kree 23 hold similar beliefs to me, as they recently joined forces with Aimsta and director Greg Wallace of AGWF to bring the single Chingona to life.  The track, produced by the homie Progeny, is a banger in the vein of the mid to late 1990s, when songs made in tribute to the power of the feminine mystique were a bit more present and prevalent in the culture.  Both MCs manage to craft creative and visual bars that convey their visions of what defines Chingona, while Wallace has fun with the visuals by blending old school looks and transitions with new school elements like emojis, used as a shorthand to further drive home the lyrical points being made.  This one has summer jam written all over it, so give it a like, leave a comment, and share it around for others to do the same!

Razor’s Edge :: Leather Tuscadero Collectively Unleashes ‘Smokes, s’Go!’

a0629181630_10

There may be a greater distance between the collective members of Leather Tuscadeo these days, but that distance has not stopped them from making classic material.  Thanks to opportunities afforded by the creative think-tank known as Concuss, the members of Leather Tuscadero (producer Progeny, emcees Evolve and Barfly, and guru Rob Castro) have unleashed a beast with the hard-hitting EP Smokes, s’Go.  In just five songs, it is abundantly clear that the chemistry between the steadily attacking Evolve and the off-kilter approach of Barfly come together like Voltron over Progeny‘s boom-bap production.  The lyrical fodder is full of sharp wordplay, pop culture references and words of warning to those thinking that testing the collective is a safe move.  I definitely see this one getting repeated play and spins during my DJ sets.  Make sure to support your local creatives, wherever they may be, via likes, shares and monetary support.

Soulful Sounds :: hERON Releases Self-Titled Debut

a2284348498_10

My man Progeny has been big-upping Rob Castro for ages, well before he even made it known that he would eventually be moving up to Seattle for full-time collaboration.  The two had collaborated on Ghost Palace music in the past, but there was always a sense that something else was brewing just below the surface.  Enter hERON, and the self-titled debut album… this instrumental project takes you on a real trip through some ethereal planes.  Every groove is on point, and the songs stand alone well while also holding up the entire project as a collective thought.  I highly recommend supporting these guys in hopes that there is more dopeness in store for all of us.

Manifest Movements :: Chisme’s ‘Nada Tengo’ Released Via Fake Four’s Freecember

a1689892618_10

What a wonderful December it’s been for my independent creative peers.  This Christmas Eve finds the homies at Fake Four releasing Nada Tengo by Chisme (also the homies) for Freecember Week 3.  Seeing REL and Progeny release their collective boom-bap magic on the same label that has signed Alligator Food and Perseph One brings me joy of the highest degree for the Texas independent hip-hop scene.  Maybe one day, if I get my musical act together in an evolved status, I may see about joining the movement.  It should go without saying, but make sure to cop this project, and take a moment to make sure your friends do the same.

True Grit :: Ghost Palace Drops ‘Vampires’ Visual

Ghost Palace stays putting in work.  Like, to a ridiculous degree.  Emcee Evolve and beatsmith Progeny are currently putting the finishing touches on their latest project, Road To Nowhere (Still Running), which should see the light of day come November.  The first single and video, Vampires, is the standard dose of dope you’d expect from these guys.  Props to Seattle artistic mastermind Graves 33 on the direction of this video.

Darkest Light :: Ghost Palace’s ‘Pushing Through Darkness’ Now Available

a1589231268_10

Ghost Palace are a dope combination that somehow manages to be severely dope while still showing infinite promise with each step they take.  Pushing Through Darkness is a brief but powerful journey through the mind of MC Evolve that exists in the sonic landscape provided by beatsmith Progeny.  Beats and bars… that’s hip hop.  These guys do it damn well.
