Pain Embraced :: Unusuals Works It Out With ‘EVERYTHING HURTS.’

a1863342361_10

Unusuals just dropped a gem on us with the full-length banger If You’re Waiting Till We’re Dead, Don’t Bother Listening., and now he’s back at it again with a fresh new batch of singles hitting the airwaves.  EVERYTHING HURTS. is the first of the batch to see the light of day, and it’s a somber tone with several movements that capture that feeling of a downward spiral with occasional gasps for air in the mix.  The drum programming is tight as hell (as always), but it’s the string juxtapositions that really make this track work… the orchestral stings play well off of the bass that meanders through the track in an Eeyore-like fashion.  This one would definitely be a good piece for a film score or something similar.  Props to Unusuals for keeping the good tunes coming.

Systematic Breakdown :: Moodie Black Waxes Poetic On Free Thinking With ‘Freedom’ Video

Moodie Black has never been a crew afraid of taking a stance, and there has always been a sense of creative freedom fostered by K that was admittedly influenced by artists like Kanye West.  It should come as no surprise, then, that the latest video from the dynamite Lucas Acid, a little diddy about unrestricted thought and acceptance of self known as Freedom, would fall in an eerily similar trajectory with Kanye‘s latest batch of polarizing statements and actions, a fact which was not missed by in preparing the video and its rollout.  All of that jazz aside, this video is showing Moodie Black honing in on their well-developed aesthetic in a way that may finally be palatable to listeners and viewers that continue to front.  Then again, the information age does not equal the enlightenment era, so maybe artists like Moodie Black will continue to break new ground that will be recognized far too late.

Building Breakdowns :: AKAdemics Represent CHHK With ‘Creation Of Destruction’ Music Video

Over the last few years, the Austin-based collective College of Hip Hop Knowledge has provided an arena for upcoming creatives to build with one another and hone their energies/skills into productive output.  Most recently, CHHK has birthed the group AKAdemics, comprised of members Big Mic, Jsun the Prophesor, and DJ Berlin.  Their latest single and video, Creation of Destruction, is an honest look at how America tends to be the master of their own negative destiny, glorifying the things that they shun at breakneck intervals.  The newreel footage blends seamlessly with the original images captured for the video, resulting in a very informed piece of work with visual and informational replay value.  Definitely support these guys and their efforts, as they are trying to make positive change on multiple levels.

Surreal Soundscapes :: Kinder Laces Soundcloud With ‘Sutures Pt. 2’

Screenshot_1

Knowing so many producers with so many ranges of styles and approaches is equal parts inspiring and humbling.  I often know that, despite my best efforts, I will always be a level or two behind quite a few names, especially members of the Exploded Drawing camp.  One of the names that comes to mind is kinder, and it’s reinforced each time he drops something new.  Sutures Pt. 2 finds kinder making music that reminds me of the old adage about cinema being ‘the wind in the trees’… something perceptible, but only because of the stimulus it causes, and not because of its own tangible qualities.  As abstract as that sounds, there’s nothing abstract about the way kinder‘s music hits you where it tends to matter most… with the variety of the last few tracks he’s dropped, I’m dying to hear another full length project.

Leveling Up :: Jeffrey Garcia Readies ‘Radio Candy’ For Release

After a successful crowdfunding venture and many weeks in production, Jeffrey Garcia is almost ready to release his latest creation, and Radio Candy looks like a doozey for real.  With Justin Conway (of Conwaythewhale), Nix Nova, and a host of Garcia regulars in tow, and what looks to be a reinvigorated and bolder approach to his already irreverently brilliant visions, Radio Candy looks to be a definitive point in both 2018’s creative output and Garcia‘s long term career.

Wired In :: Trieyevision Unleashes ‘#DataGang’ On The Listening Public

31318187_10155853819565141_155532340725022720_n

When it comes to forward thinking sonically, there are a handful of Texas-based artists that always keep things interesting.  A contingent of these artists have collaborated under the umbrella name of Trieyevision to drop a boom-bap blitzkrieg known as #DataGang.  The lineup consists of Persephone7LayerOscillatorBlack DavinciiiTony Darkmlcbr and Deerail, and the stimulation comes non-stop on this one.  The tracks are unique, and the lyrics have substance, making this 5 song collection’s whole greater than the sum of its parts.  Definitely one worth putting on your radar and spreading around.

Lucid Dreamscapes :: Chief And TheDoomsdayDevice Officially Releases ‘This Town Has Turned To Dust’

29261018_1585170024853840_3355811291582169088_n

After a two year span of personal growth and focus on film, Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice has returned to his music-making roots with the latest beat tape (for lack of a better word), This Town Has Turned To Dust.  The project was inspired by a Rod Serling episode of Playhouse 90 with a nearly similar name that focused on the fallout of the Emmitt Till lynching.  The album itself is meant to flow similar to the film Waking Life, using production by Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice in tandem with a litany of film samples to give the impression of floating from one train of thought to the next.  The project is not only deeply personal (almost as much as the upcoming rap release A Memoir Called Noir), it also serves as a defined signpost (no pun intended) for the transition between music and film that Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice is undergoing currently.  Check it out at Bandcamp or any of your other favorite online outlets, as it is available in every streaming service or digital storefront, and be sure to tell your friends to do the same.

Synesthetic Dive :: Poolboi Blu And J Brodsnax Collab For ‘Ringtone’ Visuals

The music of poolboi blu can sometimes feel deeper than just your standard boom bap or new jack swing-esque production.  The homeboy has a way of creating sonic textures and landscapes that are emotionally evocative.  Therefore, seeing what j brodsnax put together for the ringtone music video was a pleasant surprise.  The visuals work subtly with the notes that chase one another around the high hats and drums that poolboi blu sequences, even throwing a few visual riddles into the mix.  Definitely worth your time, likes and shares.  Also, get hip to horseplay if you haven’t already, because there’s more video work coming…
