A Look Back : Skatography by Nick Lochman (featuring the music of .::liquidstereoproject)

Today I was digging through some old media, and I found a nice piece of work done by my good friend Nick Lochman.  It’s a nice Audio-Visual entitled “Skatography”, and it features some vintage pre-9/11 good times in the good old SMTX 78666.  The music was done by .::liquidstereoproject, and it’s a little ditty called Abstract Freefall.

Check it out, and flash back to an easier time…

Spotlight on Photography : Jessica Higgins

Beautiful spirit.

Ear for blues.

Eye for beauty.

Enjoy.

Here is a video for Electric Mayhem, composed from photos from Jessica and music from Compound Abstract.  Ignore the promotional aspect of this particular audio-visual.

Spotlight on News : sPYhOP and The Underground Post

San Marcos has been a wealth of inspiration… the town is full of musicians, artists, young business owners, aspiring politicians and otherwise creative people.  One community it lacked, however, was a community of solid DJs.

Meeting sPYhOP put an end to my solo journey as a San Marcos DJ.  An enlightened spirit who shares a passion for music similar to mine, he is a purist through and through.  sPYhOP truly encompasses the working class hero : he is a family man, a student, an on-air personality, an aspiring graphic novelist, and a first-rate independent journalist.

I had the pleasure to help him begin his pet project, The Underground Post.  Originally a print publication, it has grown into an online hub for all things involving art, music and culture.  sPYhOP also stepped in for DJ Crown as a member of Electric Mayhem, and he throws down every Monday night at Triple Crown using vinyl only.

Take a second to peek into the world of sPYhOP, and I promise that you will not be disappointed.  Who knows, you may even be inspired to be heard as well.

My First Commission : Topdog/Underdog

I’ve been in The Epicenter the last month or two working on material for an upcoming production of the wonderful play Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks. Green Apple Collective out of El Paso, Texas is producing the play, and it will run every Friday and Saturday in July.

Seeing as this play was the Broadway debut for the mighty Mos Def, there was no way I could turn down an opportunity to score the piece. Two older compositions fit the bill for the story, but original compositions were made as character themes. Both of these pieces of music can be heard at the Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice page on BandCamp, which can be found here.

Enjoy!

Spotlight on Music : Henry + the Invisibles

Over the years, I have had the pleasure to meet scores of performers.  They have covered the entire spectrum of musicality.  Out of these many artists, never have I met one more unique than Henry + the Invisibles.  A self proclaimed onemanphunkband, Henry melds classic musical ability with a bold and adventurous sense of digital experimentation.  The result is a seamless blend of old school and new school… instant classic music and showmanship.  I have played a few shows with this cat, and I hope that there are many more to come over the years… that is, unless he blows up and becomes a household name, which he is fully capable of.

Here’s a little preview of my good friend Henry, way back in 2010:

An Introduction to Audio-Visuals

As an artist who has never liked the restraints of a title, I have made the highly arrogant decision to no longer refer to music and film unified as a “music video”, for fear that I may limit myself from the realm of creative possibilities.  I will use the term “Audio-Visuals” in place of “music video” from here on.

Thank you for taking the time to put up with my pretentiousness.

ShuffleCast 001

Periodically, great groupings of music come together on my iPod.  This podcast is meant to share those with the community of music lovers that I am a part of.  These songs serve as both entertainment and inspiration for me… perhaps they can do the same for someone else.  If these songs remind you of someone, don’t hesitate to let them know about this service I provide.  Now that my radio days are over, I need an outlet to let people know about good music in a non-mix format.

Enjoy!

Track Listing:

1. Pablo’s Cruise – The Avalanches
2. The Day The Niggaz Took Over – Dr. Dre
3. Funky Boss – Beastie Boys
4. Ceremony – New Order
5. Liquorland – Mighty Casey
6. Frosty Junction – John Spencer Blues Explosion
7. Beginner’s Falafel – Flying Lotus
8. Chicago Falcon – Budos Band
