Good Combinations :: ‘Wolfe & Bear’ Drops Courtesy Of BearTooth Collective

After hearing the twentytwo single, I’ve been eager for the release of Wolfe & Bear, the collaborative effort featuring Virgil Wolfe and Cunabear on lyrical duty and Vast Ness on production, all representing BearTooth Collective.  Luckily for me, the entire project follows the path laid by twentytwo, using lush, mellow production as a bed for lyrics that cover a wide range of topics, feelings and emotions.  This is hip-hop that feels like a good conversation with like-minded friends that leaves you feeling better than you did when you arrived.  Hopefully, these five songs are just the beginning of something bigger, but for now, be sure to check this one out, share it around, and cop it if you can.

Taste Makers :: NextGang And Breadshots Link Up For ‘0001’ Visual

Austin has always had a hip-hop scene, be it focused upon or marginalized, but lately it’s shown levels of diversity that truly validate the strength of the scene.  For an instant example of that diversity, one should look no further than the Breadshots directed visual for NextGang‘s latest, 0001.  The crew, consisting of SheLovesLyrik, ImYoungin, The Teeta and Seas, put it best in the video description :

‘The very rare legendary NextGang links up with infamous Breadshots to film a lyrical gumbo that captivates listeners with variations of cadences and styles cohesively blended to cater many genres of Hip Hop wit.’

Honestly, I’d have to agree.  On top of that, the transitions and visual trickery employed by Breadshots keep things lively, showcasing both his skill as a director/editor and the unique style of each MC.  Check this one out, share it around, and leave a comment if you dig it!

Loca Summer :: Apaso, Kree 23 And Aimsta Drop Visual For ‘Chingona’

Strong character and an independent spirit are a good look on anyone, but as a young man, that goes double for me when present in a woman.  Apparently, Apaso and Kree 23 hold similar beliefs to me, as they recently joined forces with Aimsta and director Greg Wallace of AGWF to bring the single Chingona to life.  The track, produced by the homie Progeny, is a banger in the vein of the mid to late 1990s, when songs made in tribute to the power of the feminine mystique were a bit more present and prevalent in the culture.  Both MCs manage to craft creative and visual bars that convey their visions of what defines Chingona, while Wallace has fun with the visuals by blending old school looks and transitions with new school elements like emojis, used as a shorthand to further drive home the lyrical points being made.  This one has summer jam written all over it, so give it a like, leave a comment, and share it around for others to do the same!

Emergency Broadcast :: Chris Conde And Crew Go For Broke On ‘Basic Rappers’ Visual

Over the past couple of years, Chris Conde has really honed in the defining aesthetic in all aspects that makes the music and live performances memorable.  I’ve seen glimpses in different mediums, but everything really comes together perfectly in the recently released visual for Basic Rappers, a collaboration with Angel Marcloid of Fire-Toolz on the overall vision, Scott Newman on the performance footage, Oliv on makeup and Z the Barber on hair duty.  This single (an old live show staple) and video could easily fit in as a pirate broadcast interrupting said basic rappers and warning them that mediocrity will not be tolerated in the culture from either side (performers or supporters).  Plain and simple, Conde is laying down the gospel that MCs need to hear and heed.  Dig the video, leave a like and a comment, and share it around for others to do the same!

Dedication Jams :: Terrence Wood Releases Visual For ‘By Your Side’

Anybody that’s been touched by the vivid spirit of the hip-hop culture can tell you (or attempt to, anyways) about how all-encompassing the connection is in terms of give and take.  Be it the ‘casual’ fan, or those inspired enough to contribute to the hip-hop continuum, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone connected to hip-hop from its inception in the late 1970s to a period just before the turn of the century that is not as heavily dedicated to the culture as they feel the culture is a part of their entire being.  Case in point is Terrence Wood, the MC formerly known as Side Effect, who demonstrates all of these feelings perfectly in By Your Side, his latest video and single.  Unlike other songs dedicated to hip-hop, Wood manages to actually capture the energy surrounding the culture in both his lyrics and the production.  Add to this the stark visuals provided by director Dan2TheL, which captures both direct references in the form of album covers, and the symbolic love by providing a human representative for hip-hop, and you’ve got a combination that cannot be ignored in terms of the impression it leaves.  Definitely an instant classic, and a strong video of the year contender, so be sure to like and comment on the video before sharing it around.

Multiverse Madness :: Mista Mozes Blows Minds With Dual Video For ‘The Outside/Whoa!’

These days, it seems like the best bet for getting memorable music video work as an Austin-based hip-hop artist is to enlist the assistance of NVision Media.  The latest exhibit in a long line of proven work is the latest Mista Mozes music video, a combined effort for his singles The Outside and Whoa!  Mista Mozes and director Eric Sattler leaned heavily on the influence of modern day science fiction and psychological thrillers, such as Jordan Peele‘s seminal classic Get Out, as the driving force for this compelling and thought-provoking music video that stands up perfectly to the match of Mista Mozes‘ flow over both banging tracks.  This one is layered, and definitely deserves multiple watches, which is a testament to the execution of this short film (more so than music video) in all aspects.  Dig it, leave a like and a comment, and share it around for others to do the same!

Party Favors :: Casino & Sertified Visualize For ‘Roll It Up’

Austin is no stranger to the loud, to the point where if you were to create a smoker’s anthem, there are more than enough candidates to pair up.  Two of the latest entrants are Casino and Sertified, and with their quick, laid back offering that is Roll It Up, they’ve certainly made a strong play for having the current frontrunner.  With the help of Nvision Media‘s Eric Sattler, Happy Clouds Smoke Shop, and a handful of cameos from Austin creatives, the duo made a memorable video centered around throwing a smoker’s delight style party in the ideal location.  Check out the video, leave a like and a comment, and share it around for others to do the same!

Wrecking Crew :: Aggie Stops By Rappers Playing Games (RPG) For Some ‘GTA: San Andreas’ With Protextor

It’s been a short bit, but Rappers Playing Games (RPG) is back at it again with the fresh Baby Lion content.  This time around, Laredo-born and Austin-bred rapper Aggie stopped by to pay Protextor a visit for a quick GTA: San Andreas session.  The two wreak havoc in the digital world while speaking on stress relief and sentience, and in between the romps with the cops, the two discuss Aggie‘s creative process, as well as his attempts at living in the two very different worlds that are Laredo and Austin (and their respective cultures), and even his attempts at being a good man to those he loves (and who love him).  Most every episode of Rappers Playing Games (RPG) is entertaining, but the candidness of this particular interview is eye-opening and stays with you.  Check out the series, be sure to leave a like and a comment on this video, and share it around so others can check it out too.

Money Moves :: Blackillac Drops ‘Shoebox’ Single, ‘Meet The Blacks’ Blog

Blackillac is most certainly a force to be reckoned with, and it doesn’t take much research to solidify that fact.  Exhibit A can be found in their latest single, SHOEBOX, a slow banger letting folks know that the come up is very real (monetarily and creatively).  The duo, along with guest MC 300 LBS of Guwop, drop the aforementioned knowledge over a drone-y, bass heavy track that hypnotizes the listener.  Aside from taking time in the studio, the crew has also been out on the road heavy… check out the Meet The Blacks vlog, where the first episode focuses on their time with Dew Tour 2019 :

Exchanging Ideas :: Clemits And More Bless CCFridays

CCFridays is filling a very important void in the Austin hip-hop community : a space for up and coming artists to get stage time under their belt and hone their craft while working out ideas.  Held every first and third Friday at The Exchange, the event gives an open mic atmosphere for performers to share songs, and in the case of this particular night, Austin-based stronghold Clemits performed a set.  Working my own Friday residency makes it hard to check out events like this, but if you find yourself in Austin on the proper night, definitely go check it out.
