Staking Claims :: KB The Boo Bonic Is Holding Down Her Spot With ‘Goldilox’

It has been extremely entertaining and inspirational to watch KB the Boo Bonic grow from a rap fan doing her take on southern hip hop into a genuinely unique and standout artist.  Each release has found her getting more comfortable in her style, and the last round of collaborations with The Moon Guys has resulted in a gradual evolution into a standout from the rest of the pack.  Goldilox finds KB expanding her sound to the edges of its limitations, and finding a balance that may finally afford her some of the breakthrough success she’s been on the verge of for so long.  Go ahead and check out Goldilox over on your favorite streaming or downloadable service!

Real Talk :: The Poetic Butcher Blesses Austin Poetry Slam With ‘The Non Social Network’

Every Wednesday night, a group of Austin‘s most diverse wordsmiths and creative thinkers get together for Austin Poetry Slam at Spiderhouse Ballroom.  I have heard quite a few people drop knowledge and bless the mic with verbal dexterity, but sometimes you just have to sit the people down and talk straight with them.  Enter The Poetic Butcher, and his piece titled The Non Social Network.  He’s not covering any new ground, and we are all aware of how the information age is reshaping cultures and changing the world on many levels, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t about as crystal clear as your uncle taking you aside and telling you the things that you need to hear.  I look forward to hearing more from The Poetic Butcher and the many, many other participants of Austin Poetry Slam.

That’s Entertainment :: SIP SIP Get Wild For ‘Rippin In The Kitchen’

Here we are, 4 days into 2017, and I’m pretty sure we have a strong contender for video of the year.  SIP SIP got together with my homeboy Click-Clack for a highly entertaining song titled Rippin in the Kitchen, and this video is like a truncated version of an 80s movie in all of the best ways possible.  To describe this video is to do it a disservice.  This is must watch material.  Hoping we see more and more quality work from all parties involved in this.

Parallel Realities :: Days N Daze Make ‘Damaged Goods’ Memorable

Houston-based ‘thrashgrass’ outfit Days N Daze are coming up on nearly 10 years of creative output, and the have the catalog of songs and music videos to prove it.  Their latest offering to their canon is the extremely entertaining and well executed music video for Damaged Goods.  The split screen aesthetic is certainly not uncharted territory, but these guys use is it extremely well for this song, and the result is a pleasant video that will leave you humming the song to yourself long after you’ve watched it.

Visual Delights :: ‘Welcome To Your Doom’ Dives Into Short Films

Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice (me) presents Welcome To Your Doom, episode 003.  This time, the focus is on short films, and is meant to show you that there is a wealth of entertainment on YouTube you may or may not be aware of that is highly innovative, exploratory and original.  This round of short films features the work of Jeffrey GarciaNatalia RocafuerteNicolas Luna and Nik Crawford.  It’s rated PG-13 or so, and depending on where you work, it may be NSFW.  Regardless, when you’ve got half an hour to set aside, enjoy!  New episode coming, hopefully sooner than later…

Direct Action :: Tasi’s ‘Cleanse’ Is A Minimalist Masterpiece

In a world that seems to have a pattern of becoming smitten with excess (in all forms, be it material or symbolic), it’s nice to see that there are artists who approach their expression with a bare bones aesthetic.  Artists like Tasi seem to approach the rhymes with a wisdom beyond their years, and the delivery of each line has an implied goal of permanent impression upon the memory.  Cleanse is a meditation on focus and mastery, and with a little help from Brown v. Board (one of the doper rap names I’ve seen in a minute), this video gives you proper guidance for ascension.  Definitely worth your time, your likes and your shares.

Conscious Streams :: Perseph One’s ‘Sip’ Video Is Simply Powerful

Perseph One is having a killer December.  Sip is the second video off of the recent Freecember release from Fake Four records, Machine Mammal EP.  The clip finds her meditating in a trainyard, letting the Stephen Farris instrumental serve as the perfect roadmap for her lyrical explorations.  I am excited to see what the future holds for Perseph One and Fake Four.

Anticipated Resolutions :: Zavala’s ‘Roosevelt & Letting Go’ Has Us Ready For Fake Four’s 2017

Not only has Fake Four laced us with some solid releases thus far this Freecember, they also put in the groundwork in the 4th quarter of 2016 to get us excited for the upcoming year.  One of the first releases from the label in 2017 will be Zavala‘s new album Fantasmas, and if Roosevelt & Letting Go is an indication of the work to come, then get ready for more high quality instrumental artisanship from one of Chicago‘s finest.  For now, enjoy a beautiful video for a beautiful song.

Shared Vibes :: Omenihu’s ‘All Vibes Matters’ Gets Love As It Spreads Love

You’ve gotta be open to the universe and the signals it sends you, because you never know from which direction the love may come.  Austin-based rapper Omenihu‘s latest release, All Vibes Matter, is a prime example of this, as it recently was shown major love by the blog curators over at OkayPlayer.  The song is dope, the video has a nice aesthetic to it that will make it hard to place its direct timeframe when it’s rediscovered way down the line, and a co-sign from the homie Delano Taylor on Facebook doesn’t hurt either.  I really enjoyed this song… a nice positive button for the end of this trying year.

Lucid Dreams :: One Who May Ascend (OMA) Drops Visuals For ‘Comatoast’

One who May Ascend (OMA) has taken up steady residence on a list of artists to keep an eye out for in 2017.  Several of his videos have crept up on my radar this year, and they have all made an impression.  Comatoast is no different, and this one takes a direct look at depression and the onsets of what some would dub mental illness.  As a fellow creative type, I can certainly understand how difficult your daily walk can be when you’re constantly in such heavy and varying emotional mindstates.  This video does a good job of capturing the feelings that are so hard to express in anything other than songform.  Much respect to OMA for having the skills and foresight to use the music video medium to its full potential.
