Double Feature :: Chief And TheDoomsdayDevice Drops A Duo Of Film-Based YouTube Videos

Recently, the homie Big Black Guy Reviews and myself decided to tackle a review of the Richard Pryor classic Bustin’ Loose in the wake of Cicely Tyson‘s passing.  Ironically, what started as a quick examination of a seemingly light-hearted Pryor offering not only sent us down a number of rabbit holes, but ended up taking so long that it became bookended by the passing of Richard Pryor collaborator and friend Paul Mooney… and once you hit the end of the video, you’ll realize the madness is far from done.

With that collaboration under the belt, not to mention a number of projects outside of the film realm being wrapped up or nearing completion, I turned my attention back to the DOOMonFILM YouTube channel and decided to produce a re-entry video of sorts.  Rather than jumping headlong back into some crazy observation or theory video, I decided it might be beneficial to share a short list of films that I currently would hold as my top ten, and thus, my latest DOOMonFILM entry was created :

If you enjoy either of the videos (or maybe even both), then like them up, comment then up and share them around! If you’re really into what we’re putting down, then don’t hesitate to subscribe to Big Black Guy ReviewsYouTube channel and DOOMonFILM, and as always, support your local and independent creatives!

Deep Diving :: The #WeirdRapDiscussionGang And Friends Go In-Depth On ODB’s ‘Return To The 36 Chambers : The Dirty Version’

Being a part of the #WeirdRapDiscussionGang has been a true honor, but of all the episodes we’ve done, the one that really meant the most to me was our discussion centered around Ol’ Dirty Bastard and his debut album, the instant classic and Grammy nominated Return to the 36 Chambers : The Dirty Version.  Th’MoleBeverly Fre$h and myself welcomed Skiz Fernando and Tokyo Cigar to the fold as we all provided our insight and personal experiences with the album, and then Th’Mole went the extra step of contacting and interviewing Buddha Monk for additional insider insight into Dirty‘s art, craft and the making of his debut.  Definitely check this one out, leave a like and a comment, share it around for everyone to enjoy, and most importantly, subscribe to the Weird Rap YouTube channel so you never miss out!

Square Biz :: Deuce Malone Drops Science And Drops Names In Latest Vlog Post

One of the best aspects of being a native Austinite and growing up in the central Texas area is the wealth of creative and highly driven individuals that populate the area.  One of my long-standing friends and creative collaborators, Deuce Malone of The World of Deuce online, clearly mirrors that sentiment, as he is known for sharing posts all across social media sharing the secrets behind his rise into an industry position that suits him well.  After a recent spotlight in Voyage AustinDeuce decided to immediately pay it forward (and in some ways, pay it back) by dropping a video on his self-titled YouTube channel called How I Got a Job in Radio that breaks down the importance of not only creating a network of like-minded individuals, but how key it is to maintain that network as well as just how easy it can be to create one if your intentions are correct.  If you’re looking for business tips, entertainment insight or sincere motivation, then subscribe to Deuce Malone on YouTube, but regardless, check out this video and make those key adjustments in your life!

Weirding Out :: The #WeirdRapDiscussionGang Keeps The Momentum Going

Having the honor of being a core member of the #WeirdRapDiscussionGang is truly amazing, as it affords me at least one opportunity a week to complete go untethered in terms of my love for hip-hop music.  We’ve been putting in a lot of work over at the Weird Rap YouTube channel, not to mention expanding our reach for the #WeirdRapDiscussionGang series into the podcast world, and our latest few episodes have been dynamite… we’ve recently covered science-fiction-based hip-hop, went down the rabbit hole of viewer suggestions with super special guest David Liebe Hart and did a deep dive into the work of Philly-based MC Tierra Whack.  If you love hip-hop music, YouTube commentary or sincere entertainment, then get locked into the Weird Rap network sooner than later, and if it really speaks to you, then be a supporter over at the Weird Rap Patreon page.  Big ups to Th’Mole for putting everything together and to Beverly Fre$h for always having an interesting point of view.

Shop Talk :: #WeirdRapDiscussionGang Keeps Momentum Going With Episodes On Billy Woods And The Pharcyde

Being a part of the Weird Rap‘s YouTube and podcast series #WeirdRapDiscussionGang has not only been an honor, it has been extremely educational, insightful and inspirational.  As a lover of hip-hop and an ex-record store employee, the need to indulge in deep conversations about music and culture has been ingrained into my DNA, and thanks to Th’Mole#WeirdRapDiscussionGang has served as the perfect way to scratch that itch.  Our last two episodes featured an in-depth look at the incredibly dense mystery of an album that is Hiding Places by Billy Woods, as well as a discussion of the first two albums and overall career of Los Angeles hip-hop icons The Pharcyde.  If you love hearing nerds talk that nerd talk about moving music, then do yourself a favor and subscribe to the Weird Rap channel today, because it feels like this boulder is preparing to gain some momentum.

Special Feature :: Chief And TheDoomsdayDevice Visits The ‘Back To The Feature’ Podcast

Friends and fans of Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice are likely aware that film is just as important to me as music.  Recently, after weeks of behind the scenes work from the homie Conwaythewhale, I was lucky enough to be interviewed by Justin and Edward of the Back to the Feature podcast, where the duo generally reviews film, talks topics and interviews Texas-based movers and shakers.  Over the course of about an hour and a half, we talk about my short films, some of the upcoming projects I have taken part in, my collaborative efforts with Jeffrey Garcia, my recent top films of 2020 list from the DOOMonFILM blog and much more, and in all honesty, it felt like we could’ve kept going on and on.  If you’re a fan of film and have some time to spare, I highly recommend giving this one a spin on Spotify, or wherever you stream your podcasts!

Talking Shop :: Weird Rap Presents The #WeirdRapDiscussionGang On YouTube

One of my personal highlights of 2020 was the development of a working and social relationship with the super talented producer and social media influencer Th’Mole.  After a long period of social media interaction on the Weird Rap Discussion Group, as well as other random online meetings, he approached me with an opportunity to collaborate on a project (which is currently in the works).  Not too long after this opportunity was presented, he followed up with something I’d been dying to be a part of for quite a while : the chance to be a talking head on a YouTube series dedicated to talking about hip-hop albums and artists that may have been overlooked or underappreciated.  The series, which eventually became known as the #WeirdRapDiscussionGang, features Th’Mole, myself, Beverly Fre$hOxygen Elmo and Nosaj of New Kingdom, and so far, episodes have been posted focusing on Freestyle Fellowship‘s Innercity Griots, our favorite songs by Tricky, and Blowout Comb by Digable Planets.  If you dig what you see in these episodes, be sure to like them, comment on them and subscribe to the channel, because we’re just getting started.

Residual Energy :: Anthony Maintain Drops ‘Ghost Pipes’ For Fake Four Inc.’s #FREEcember Week Two

I’ll let the homie Anthony Maintain break it all down…

Ghost Pipes (Monotropa Uniflora): Herbaceous perennial plants native to temperate regions of Asia, North America and northern South America.  Their lack of chlorophyll gives them their characteristic translucence which lead to the common names of ghost pipe, corpse plant, ice plant, and ghost flower.  These rare heterotrophic plants can grow in near total darkness since, unlike photosynthetic plants, they do not draw nutrients from the sun.  They instead pull sustenance from surrounding tree roots and forest brush via mushroom mycelium.  This relationship is not symbiotic, it is more parasitic in nature.  Though the ghost pipe does not contribute anything of known value back to it’s host, humans have discovered valuable uses for the plant.  While the entire plant is technically edible, this is not the best use.  Through extraction, M. Uniflora has been found to create an effective pain relieving tincture helping those with both physical and emotional suffering.  It is said not to erase the pain entirely, but to put the person beside the pain in a more cognitive sense of acceptance.

These songs are ghost pipes for myself and others.” – Anthony Maintain

This year’s #FREEcember is off to a bang, and I am not only happy to know that Ghost Pipes can finally be heard by the masses, but honored to be sharing a split LP consisting of Anthony Maintain‘s EP on one side and mine on the other.  You can download the digital album for free (or donate) at the links above, and if you choose so, you can pre-order our vinyl.  Major shout out to Fake Four Inc. for helping make all of this happen!
