Artists of all varieties that I know and work with.

Spotlight on Crews : (RAS) Riders Against the Storm

Two souls…two healers…two emcees…two lovers…two souls… ON A MISSION!

A few months back, I had the pleasure of playing a show/birthday party in Austin with several acts, DJs and graf artists.  There was a wide variety of music, and the night was memorable, but one group left a lasting impression, and that group was (RAS) Riders Against The Storm.

Formed by husband and wife team Jbro and Tiger Lily, this crew is as much a movement as it is a hip-hop group.  The two exude social awareness, family values and knowledge of self so effortlessly, yet efficiently, that you are permanently changed by experiencing them.  The music is both ahead of it’s time and a callback to the golden age.  The stage show is on the money… visually and emotionally stimulating.

There are many things currently happening within the world of (RAS).  Both of their albums are currently free on their BandCamp site.  The website currently host the I AM TROY DAVIS blog series, a tribute to the life and death of Troy Davis, through the eyes and experience of another individual.  Their Willis and Tameka skits have been recently used to educate about the Prison Industrial Complex :

Please take the time to keep (RAS) on your radar… big things are in store from this crew, and they deserve all of it.

NickNack – “Nobody Else” : Stepping the game up!

“Sometimes, the smallest things take up the most room in your heart”
– Winnie the Pooh

Take a second and dig on my old school homeboy Nick Nack‘s latest creation from the latest project.  Very nice audio-visual… this is how you make classic material without breaking the bank.  Enjoy.

Spotlight on Friends : Da’Shade Moonbeam

Back in the late 90’s, I was just beginning my career as a professional musician.  Hip-Hop Mecca was in full swing on the Austin scene, and I was getting DJ spots with those guys back in high school.  Playing for touring acts and getting to meet local legends like Nick-Nack, Tee Double, Bavu Blakes and Mirage allowed me to form some long lasting friendships.  One specific individual, however, helped me turn the corner and learn to cultivate my artistic talents and express myself.  This individual was Da’Shade Moonbeam.

We originally met at Reagan High School in the theatre department.  It didn’t take long for us to realize that we were both huge fans of The Dungeon Family, and by extension, the growth and development of the south as a true force in hip-hop expression.  We both had a love for poetry, both in verse form and in expressionistic form.  Through the vehicle of the DKC (founded by NOOK), we were able to give back to the Austin community via entertainment (Jump On It!) and activism.

Over the years, Da’Shade has become a force to be reckoned with on the Austin creative scene.  He is one half of the Austin hip-hop mainstay Blacklisted Individuals.  He has been seen working the likes of Zell Miller on the Austin theater front.  He has been a vital part of the slam poetry teams that have gained Austin so much recognition.  He is changing the shape of finding inner peace through combat arts in the form of Cry Havoc Action Choreography.  He was even recently mentioned in an Austin 360 article:

The longtime member of the socially conscious Austin rap crew Blacklisted Individuals is setting out solo to redefine the hip-hop live set, using theater, video, poetry, dance and more to immerse crowds in a complete creative environment.

Don’t take my word for any of this though… the truth always speaks for itself:

Spotlight on Design : MOFOZ Visualz

From the digital desk of MOFOZ Visualz:

Mofoz is an Austin based company with fam and members everywhere, look to your left…now look to your right…look in a mirror, some may even be yourselves. Mofoz was the name and crew set forth from a group of friends to conceptualize, collaborate and then finally to produce works of progressive imagination and creativity.

The company has been founded on dedication to and promotion of contemporary fashion, art, music, art, and design.

———————————————-

I have worked with my man MOFOZ for ages now… from park jams to art on the sides of businesses, his influence is felt more than the average person realizes.  A forerunner in the customized kicks game, his designs are definitely noticed.  It doesn’t hurt to have a gifted MC like Phranchyze backing up your work and giving it even more credibility.

Recently, MOFOZ put out a list of 10 Texas Hip Hop Projects To Share… definitely check that out and get hip to what’s going on in the underground hip-hop scene around these parts.

Take some time to visit mofozvisualz.com, and explore a truly creative world… maybe even find out how you can be down.

Spotlight on Politics : The City of San Marcos v. Planet K (San Marcos)

In the fall of 2007, the staff of the newly opened Planet K San Marcos (including myself) celebrated our achievement with an on-site party/bbq.  Several bands played, prizes were given away, and an ’88 Oldsmobile was beat with a sledgehammer for charity.

In the following weeks, the Oldsmobile was de-wheeled, painted by a local artist and a nationally recognized artist who specializes in painting reclaimed objects, filled with dirt, and turned into a cactus planter.  The planter was affectionately named Ralph, after the famous swimming pig that once performed at Aquerina Springs.  Shortly after, the City of San Marcos cited the planter as a junk vehicle and threatened to fine the store for every day it remained on our property.

Planet K, of course, took exception to this, seeing as the supposed junk vehicle no longer classified as a vehicle.  Planet K has a history of cactus planters on its Austin and San Antonio properties, and the company took the necessary precautions to make the vehicle incapable of trapping an individual.  The fluids were also drained from the vehicle.  Therefore, the “vehicle” was actually nothing more than a blank canvas wrapped around a cactus planter.

The local case, through the process of appeals, found itself facing a possible hearing before the Supreme Court this past October.  The case was denied, however, and the Fifth Circuit’s decision that “only great works of art are protected by First Amendment free speech rights” stood.  The vehicle was removed from the property, but luckily it was saved, and now sits in exile at the Planet K located on Stassney, in Austin.

The company is now working on an initiative that would allow the issue to be placed on the ballot of the upcoming fall voting session in San Marcos.  Signatures are being sought after from supporters that are registered to vote in the city of San Marcos.  If 1800 votes are collected, the people of San Marcos will make the final decision.

For those who are registered in San Marcos and would like to support, visit Planet K San Marcos, or call (512)392-4596 and ask what you can do to help support bringing Ralph home.

If you are not registered, but would still like to support the cause, you can volunteer at the store as well, or call the same number.

Spotlight on RapAndPaint : Emcee Eats (Vincent Martinez)

Originality is king… in today’s world, you’ve gotta be multitalented, you’ve gotta do it well, and you’ve gotta go big.  Over the years, one member of the Austin area community continues to push (and/or blur) the lines between hip-hop and art, and that man is Emcee Eats.

First, the music.  The flow is dope.  The beat selection is ill.  The content is multi-layered and mandatory of multiple listens, because each listen brings forth new elements.  Imagine Busta Rhymes via Jackson Pollack.  Descriptions, however, truly cannot do the music justice… only a listen can:

Then, there’s the art… the range and scope of his vision has yet to be quantified.  Any object is a blank slate, yet the training and technique of college bring forth works worth hanging in your home.  The influences are as vast (in my opinion) as Picasso, yet as recent as Basquiat, or even Stephen Powers.  Graf mindstate with gallery aesthetics, and the attitude of an MC.  Definitely, a force to be reckoned with.

By the way, Eats is gonna catch wreck on the opening track of the upcoming It/ll Be Better Tomorrow, my new LP.  Dig.

Spotlight on Illustration : Mathew Reynolds | The Ill Mathematical | batfish73

Mathew Reynolds (batfish73) is a gifted man with many talents.  I was introduced to his supreme music making ability initially.  We met digging for vinyl at Sundance, and as he gave me a ride home he threw a cassette of his beats in the deck.  I thought I was listening to Public Enemy remix instrumentals, and I was expecting him to hit fast forward… slowly, I began to realize that the massive sounds coming from that system were originals by The Ill Mathematical… naturally, he became the original beatsmith (along with Adlib Hopkins).  His musical talent is widely known in the area.

People, however, may not be familiar with his natural talent at illustration.  The man may as well be a photographer, he can capture the essence of a moment so well.  Whether it be his famous collection of Indian Jones illustrations, his touching a heartfelt Vietnam veteran portrait work, or his upcoming opus Vic Falcon, all of his work is worth multiple and intense looks.

Following is only a small cross section of his work.  Click on any of the pictures to see his profile on deviantART, or simply click here.

Spotlight on Friends : John Fox

This past weekend, many of us in San Marcos, Texas lost a dear friend.  John Fox was one of those rare people who managed to stay optimistic throughout all obstacles that life places in front of us.  His glow will continue to shine in the words and actions of his friends.

Charrisa Jeannett is putting together a book for John’s family of notes, drawings, poems, etc about how much we love John or maybe just something that reminds you of him.  She is working to get it together before the funeral (which has not been set).  If you would like to participate, you may contact her at charissajeannett@yahoo.com, or through Facebook.

Remember, life is something to be treasured.  We should all be lucky enough to enjoy life the way John did, in intervals at the least.  Tell somebody that you love them today… you don’t know when the next opportunity will be…

Spotlight on Art : caioneach and dutchslavetrade

taken from the dutchslavetrade blog:

One day in 2002, I was moving and had taken a break to go to the store. I ran into my friend Greg  and asked him if he would help me move my organ into my moving van after he got off work. I gave him this painting for his assistance. I Like Andy Warhol in Blackface…so named in tribute to Larry River’s 1970 piece I Like Olympia in Blackface. I’m currently working on recreating this on a larger scale so that it incorporates a stronger Warholian aspect.

taken from caioneach‘s Facebook page:

: ” I think I should dial this mojo down a bit.”

: ” If the rapture was happening. I’m not sure I would know, most of the people I deal with are secular minded anyway. I mean a few of you are god fearing but we don’t talk much….I do live near a bunch of churches so that may tip me off.”

: “you, my friend, are the face of evil. Please have this dollar to insure my safe passage.”

: “now comes that ole jingle jangle of jingoism.”
