Walking Dead :: Worm Suicide Drops Video For ‘Lead Pipe’

When it comes to being an independent band, making the most of your promotional material is a must.  Budgetary limits tend to be a bit of a constraint, but with a little creativity and ingenuity, classics can be created out of little to nothing.  In the case of Worm Suicide, they used a green screen, some patience in the editing room, and an assist from the public domain in the form of the original Night of the Living Dead, and the result is the hilarious and infectious Lead Pipe.  Check it out, give it a like and a comment if you dig it, and spread it around for others to enjoy.

Live Direct :: HaplogroupX Rocks Live From The ‘Duress EP Release Show’

A couple of Sundays ago, MC Homeless teamed up with HaplogroupX for an online show titled Homeless/Haplo virtual show to end police brutality.  Had the goal stated in the title of the event worked, then the team would have done something extraordinary, but what was achieved was the release of Duress, an collaborative EP between the two camps.  During the live show, Bernichus and Transplant performed and documented their portion of the live show and decided to share it via YouTube for those unable to tune in to the event.  Check it out, leave a like and a comment if you dig it, and share it around if you know somebody that would enjoy this.

Imitation Game :: The Vortex Presents Stream Of ‘Underground’ For Juneteenth

Several years ago, The Vortex in Austin played host to an incredibly moving piece of theatre titled Underground.  The show focuses on two former college friends connected by protest and direct action who, after quite a bit of time gowing and living their respective lives, find themselves facing their troubled past with brutal honesty.  The talent on both sides of this production is stellar : Dr. Lisa B. Thompson wrote it, the play was directed by Rudy Ramirez, and best of all (my personal opinion), stars my old high school friend Jeffrey Johnson and fellow college theater-mate Marc Pouhé.  I had the pleasure of seeing this live during its original run, and this presentation comes as close to capturing the energy of a live run as a set of cameras can.  Enjoy, donate to The Vortex or those involved if you choose, leave a like and a share if it moves you, and share it around so others can enjoy.

Hard Truths :: Lil’ Ghostwriter Releases ‘A Song For The Police’ On Weird Rap Recrods

After dropping Interdependence, a compilation curated by Weird Rap in hopes of raising money for those impacted by COVID-19Th’ Mole found himself caught between new and refreshed connections with a handful of talent, and a world devolving into a breaking point of racial tension and minority/police interactions filled with struggle and strife.  With such a striking crossroads laid out, it only seemed logical to address both of these things directly, and with Lil’ Ghostwriter‘s Inner Plenum EP on the verge of release through Weird Rap Records, the duo decided to address the issues and ills with urgency.  Over a chaotic, edge-filled production by Th’ MoleLil’ Ghostwriter lays out a laundry list of facts and observations dealing directly with the blemish-filled past relations between police and minorities.  With the long road to change just now coming into view, songs like these are of utmost importance, so check it out, share it around, and leave a like and a comment if you hear what’s being said.

Bonus Truths :: TrumpCard Collaborates With Chief And TheDoomsdayDevice For ‘Shithole’

As painful as it is to sit back and watch the ills and injustices that are currently taking place (and have taken place for longer than I’ve been on this Earth), you find yourself in between the rock of silent, sad acceptance and the hard place of trying to clarify emotionally intense reactions in order to share them as sound, logical points.  Luckily, I find myself able to work though most issues with my pen, and it didn’t take much convincing when The SCROTUS reached out to me for inclusion on Shithole, one of the lead singles off of TrumpCard‘s upcoming second release, Cult 45.  Rather than put on a performance, The SCROTUS decided that reality spoke more than enough for the sentiments shared in this song, hence a video comprised of news and protest footage juxtaposed against images of American ‘values’.  This video is not an easy watch, but it is an important one, especially if we are looking to change this reality in any way, shape or form.  Please watch, please share, and please do not be silent against what you feel is unjust or an injustice.

Mood Music :: Tiny Toro Pulls You In With ‘Ashes And Honey’

a3702476443_10

It’s awesome when supporting your friends leads to new discoveries, and doubly awesome when those discoveries are worthwhile.  This was the case when my friend Zoe Thomas posted about artwork she’d done for Ashes and Honey, the most recent release from San Marcos-based experimental instrumentalist Tiny Toro.  I was not familiar with Tiny Toro prior to this post, but as a fan of moody, somber instrumental music, this was one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve had in recent memory.  If you’re looking for a small slice of peace and tranquility in an increasingly hectic existence, then Ashes and Honey has you covered, even if only for a brief time.

A couple of Fridays ago, the homie Protextor had me on as a guest for the Protextor’s Playhouse segment of Coldtowne Theater Company‘s Twitch-based programming, ColdtowneTV.  Over the course of 20 or so minutes, Protextor and myself talked about life during COVID-19, video games, the creative process and much more.  Check out this interview (and the whole broadcast if you’re up for being entertained), and be sure to check out ColdtowneTV every Friday night for more entertainment.

Dark Matter :: MC Homeless & HaplogroupX Combine For ‘Duress’ EP

a0782371970_10

If you like your hip-hop reference-filled, sarcastic with a side of hard truth, all over jazzy melodies that hold ill drums together, then Duress has arrived for you like pennies from heaven.  HaplogroupX (consisting of Bernichus and producer/engineer Transplant) has teamed up with the formidable MC Homeless to release the project on Milled Pavement Records, and honestly, I’m surprised that this combination did not happen sooner, as it sounds completely natural.  Transplant has put together an amazing collection of tracks that are sequenced like a film score, and the MC pairing (along with special guest Anthony Maintain) have put out an early contender for the 2020 Top 10 lists for those smart enough to get hip.  Definitely don’t skip this one out… seek it out on Bandcamp to support directly, or find it on your favorite digital storefront/streaming service, and support your local creatives.

Weird Therapy :: Weird Rap Releases ‘Interdependence’ Benefit Compilation

a1859547632_10

From the digital desk of Weird Rap :

Mutual Aid Disaster Relief is a collectively-run, decentralized volunteer network supporting marginalized communities during crises, including the current COVID-19 pandemic, by providing resources, boosting local efforts, and sharing knowledge and skills.  Acting as an autonomy, with a loosely-based, adaptable structure, alone or with other groups, MADR is able to focus and maximize its energy, efficiently responding to events as needed while avoiding pitfalls of traditionally-structured non-profits.  The principle of “solidarity, not charity” means that actions are based on the stated needs of the communities it serves, working cooperatively rather than administering from above.

Weird Rap explores the exceptional, unusual, or otherwise “weird” currents of rap music, new & old.  Across various platforms, we seek to nurture discussion, share new and old music releases, and spread general awareness of out-of-the-ordinary rap artists.  Aside from social media, we host Weird Rap TV on YouTube, Weird Rap Radio on Spotify, r/WeirdRap on Reddit, and Weird Rap Records on Bandcamp, with a podcast currently in the works.

In cooperation with fellow underground hip hop labels Audio Recon and Hecticrecs, Weird Rap’s Interdependence compilation is Weird Rap’s first full-length music release.  A response to the pandemic we all know and hate, 100% of its profits are being donated to Mutual Aid Disaster Relief, supporting their efforts around COVID-19 and future disasters.

With the generosity of the artists involved, we’ve hand-picked what we consider to be an amazing array of exclusive music including experimental rap pioneers : Kool Keith and Rammellzee, art rap legends Awol One, Beans, MC Paul Barman, Mike Ladd, Mestizo and Staplemouth, and contemporary mavericks Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice, Clipping, cunabear, Duncecap, Lil Ghostwriter, Mr. Yote and War Church.’

Jazztronic Journeys :: Kinder Prepares ‘MG’ Release

From the digital desk of Growth in Decay Records :

San Marcos-based electronic producer Kinder intertwines elements of jazz, funk, new age & house on his new album entitled MG. Applying his background as a bassist and his ear for lovely chord progressions, Kinder creates a lane of his own in the GiD catalogue.

Utilizing live instrumentation & a little programming, he gives his sound a unique and organic feel. The album title MG is derived from his heavy implementation of the classic Moog synthesizer that is found all over the release. After using the Moog for years, Kinder wanted to take a deeper dive into the iconic piece of gear. The goal was to apply it in a different manner than he has in the past.’

Check it out and lock yourself down a pre-order!
