Fight Song :: Poolboi Blu Remixes ‘Square Up’

artworks-000586182500-3dv4k3-t500x500

While most people know of poolboi blu for his original production, his steadily growing performance career, or his s i n c e r e radio series, but quiet as kept, the homie is building up a steady catalog of strong remixes.  His latest is a sinister turn on a comedy hip-hop classic, the Zack Fox and Kenny Beats collaboration Square Up.  The song itself is highly infectious with the original Kenny Beats production, but the lighthearted nature is flipped on its head and turned into something with a bit of potential menace after going through the poolboi blu filter.  Like many of his other remixes, I’ll definitely be adding this one into my live mixes, so keep an ear open for it.  If you dig the song, leave a comment somewhere on the track, and share it around so others can enjoy it as well!

Mental Math :: SniperShot Drops Dope Visual For ‘Fibonacci Microphone Pimpin’

There’s something special about SniperShot‘s ability to mix the rawness and immediacy of hip-hop with the knowledge, wisdom and understanding that comes with enlightenment.  Be he broadcasting from nature, the streets or the stage, his ability to turn concepts into lyrical darts is one that must be admired, and it’s arguable that he’s never sounded better doing this than he does on his latest single and video, Fibonacci Microphone Pimpin.  With the help of some visualized mental equations and trippy visual accents, SniperShot drops confident bars over a gold-school sounding beat that would’ve made many West Coast and Third Coast artists jealous that they missed out on it.  Definitely dive into this video, share it around for others to do the same, and leave a like and/or comment to let SniperShot know what you think!

Therapeutic Movement :: Curbside Jones Moves Bodies And Spirits With ‘Let’s Be Clear’

a1448112098_10

If the motto of an age that has passed on was ‘ignorance is bliss’, then maybe we should adopt a new one in our age of information and social media : ‘clarity is bliss’.  It appears that Curbside Jones may agree with me, as the topic and title of his latest genre-shifting single mirror my sentiments via the statement Let’s Be Clear.  Curbside Jones puts it beautifully in the song’s liner notes :

Let’s Be Clear was created after multiple thoughts and conversations about how my generations treats relationships; romantic and recreational.  We tend to expect more than we give and we often have a hard time understanding where we stand with people.  These feelings could be linked to the online culture we have adopted or just a lack of empathy.  When these feelings go unchecked we end up with a sense of entitlement to others time and energy.”

Amen to that… we must realize that all communication, spoken, written or otherwise, leaves an impression and makes an impact on those around us.

As for Let’s Be Clear, it’s the lead single off of the upcoming EP Kwamé Vol.1, and if this is an indication of Curbside Jones stretching his creative wings, I will definitely be here to reap the benefits of those results.  Check out the track, share it around, and cop it if you’ve got a spare buck lying around.

Funky Dividends :: ‘BMF (Big Money Facts)’ Visualized By Clova And $outh$ide Hippie

Anyone who steps away from the visual for BMG (Big Money Facts) by Clova and $outh$ide Hippie (beautifully put together by Big&Little Productions) unclear of what motivates the duo may need their head checked.  The Austin-based hip-hop duo make it pretty straight forward in both their lyrics and the visuals that accompany them… money is the major motivating factor, and they are not ashamed to stand behind that.  Rap life is lived to the fullest in this visual, with the studio session blasting the track, plenty of drink and smoke to go around, homies paying surprise visits (Austin modern day legend Sertified, in this case), and money raining from the sky to drive it all home.  This one is solid and straightforward, to great effect if I say so myself, so let’s all get behind it by liking the vid, leaving a comment, and sharing it around for others to do the same!

Natural Momentum :: Gost Drops ‘Sustain’ Single

As 2019 moves forward, Gost continues to test the waters in preparation of releasing an LP.  His latest single, Sustain, is both an ode to his life’s work and ambition, as well as a signal to all peers and competitors that Gost will be one that breaks through by any means necessary.  The skill is definitely there, the confidence grows with each song released, and the production selection is on point, so I have no choice other than to believe what Gost professes.  The true heads out there will do the same, so be one of them by leaving a comment on the track and sharing it around for others to hear.

Good Combinations :: ‘Wolfe & Bear’ Drops Courtesy Of BearTooth Collective

a1293956160_10

After hearing the twentytwo single, I’ve been eager for the release of Wolfe & Bear, the collaborative effort featuring Virgil Wolfe and Cunabear on lyrical duty and Vast Ness on production, all representing BearTooth Collective.  Luckily for me, the entire project follows the path laid by twentytwo, using lush, mellow production as a bed for lyrics that cover a wide range of topics, feelings and emotions.  This is hip-hop that feels like a good conversation with like-minded friends that leaves you feeling better than you did when you arrived.  Hopefully, these five songs are just the beginning of something bigger, but for now, be sure to check this one out, share it around, and cop it if you can.

Taste Makers :: NextGang And Breadshots Link Up For ‘0001’ Visual

Austin has always had a hip-hop scene, be it focused upon or marginalized, but lately it’s shown levels of diversity that truly validate the strength of the scene.  For an instant example of that diversity, one should look no further than the Breadshots directed visual for NextGang‘s latest, 0001.  The crew, consisting of SheLovesLyrikImYounginThe Teeta and Seas, put it best in the video description :

‘The very rare legendary NextGang links up with infamous Breadshots to film a lyrical gumbo that captivates listeners with variations of cadences and styles cohesively blended to cater many genres of Hip Hop wit.’

Honestly, I’d have to agree.  On top of that, the transitions and visual trickery employed by Breadshots keep things lively, showcasing both his skill as a director/editor and the unique style of each MC.  Check this one out, share it around, and leave a comment if you dig it!

Loca Summer :: Apaso, Kree 23 And Aimsta Drop Visual For ‘Chingona’

Strong character and an independent spirit are a good look on anyone, but as a young man, that goes double for me when present in a woman.  Apparently, Apaso and Kree 23 hold similar beliefs to me, as they recently joined forces with Aimsta and director Greg Wallace of AGWF to bring the single Chingona to life.  The track, produced by the homie Progeny, is a banger in the vein of the mid to late 1990s, when songs made in tribute to the power of the feminine mystique were a bit more present and prevalent in the culture.  Both MCs manage to craft creative and visual bars that convey their visions of what defines Chingona, while Wallace has fun with the visuals by blending old school looks and transitions with new school elements like emojis, used as a shorthand to further drive home the lyrical points being made.  This one has summer jam written all over it, so give it a like, leave a comment, and share it around for others to do the same!

Triple Down :: THREE HEADED DRAGON Debuts With ‘STAND ALONE DIFFERENT’

a0936487871_10

EVOLVE is back at it again, and this time he has a crew with him… with the assistance of fellow MCs (and professed brothers) Mic Melt and Palmleaf, the culture has been blessed with THREE HEADED DRAGON, a lyrical conglomerate ill enough to stand up to comparison with the greats.  Their debut, STAND ALONE DIFFERENT, is an immediate testament to this statement, as it somehow manages to display each MCs’ unique style while still flowing as a coherent whole.  The producer list is vast, with input  from TRYSTYLRemy CosmoJohn HenryBilly YoungTankwon and Stay BusyIll FistoIBE Hustlesand Phonolit, plus cuts on a cut by SWAB, but as stated before, there are no dips in quality or slow, uninteresting moments… every songs guides the listener through its world, and then hands off the listener to the next one in line until we are left with silence and hopes for more.  This one is dope, so don’t sleep.  Check it out, share it around, and support by copping a digi version, or some of that physical merch, or maybe even both!

Connected Loners :: Virgil Wolfe And Qualms Make ‘C O N T A C T’

artworks-000574368107-kswcl8-t500x500

Collaborative musicmaking can be a truly magical thing.  For example, it seems like Qualms had a track that could easily be showcased on a Lo Fi Hip-Hop Beats to Study To YouTube stream.  Virgil Wolfe has a penchant for dropping introspective, moving, thought-provoking lyrics… turns out Qualms does as well.  Luckily for us, the two put their heads together, and the result is C O N T A C T, a true headphone masterpiece.  Virgil is on a monster run this summer, low key dropping gem after gem, so if you’re not already hip to his Soundcloud page, now would be a good time to do so.  Check out the track, heart it up and leave a comment, and share it around for others to do the same!
