Run Through :: Secret Levels And Protextor Deep Dive Into ‘Ninja Gaiden’ For ‘Rappers Playing Games (RPG)’

Secret Levels is an expert and an aficionado in a wide range of skill sets.  Be it skateboarding, rhyming, breakdancing, acting, or being a general entertaining guy, Secret Levels is running on a wavelength that many only dream of.  It’s no surprise, then, that he would be able to join Protextor for the latest session of Rappers Playing Games (RPG), pick one of the hardest games in Nintendo‘s existence in the form of Ninja Gaiden, and subsequently run through it like a hot knife through butter.  During the one-life run through, Secret Levels and Protextor discuss being in harmony with your being, the secrets to mastering yourself via your art, tips for running through Ninja Gaiden, and so much more.  As per usual, support Baby Lion and the Rappers Playing Games (RPG) series via likes, comments, shares and subscribes, and behold the amazing feat that is Secret Levels making light work of a difficult classic.

Isolation Drills :: Sanitizer Releases ‘#1 Dad’ Project

a2603448858_10

While music is inherently a group-based discipline, there’s something to be said for those who strive to maximize minimalism.  Austin-based solo multi-instrumentalist Sanitizer seems to be one of those artists that thrives in minimalism, and his latest release, the lush lo-fi delight that is #1 Dad, is a display of his multi-instrumental prowess and songwriting variety.  His muted vocals and textured compositions pull you in, and I definitely look forward to multiple listens that will (hopefully) unveil lyrical gems and musical moments of unique expression.  I was not familiar with Sanitizer prior to my Bandcamp deep dig, but I am definitely happy that I stumbled across this one.  Give it a listen and a share, and keep supporting your local creatives!

Dark Arts :: Evolve And Crew Combine With Moodie Black On ‘SHANKS AND CHANDELIERS’

a2351414491_10

Collective efforts can add momentum and weight to a project that solo ventures rarely possess.  Recently, Evolve secured a group of Moodie Black produced beats, called up a crew of folks with bars, and the result is the brief put powerful Valley Winter Chasing Fire by SHANKS AND CHANDELIERS.  The collective is made up of MCs PHreddy Lou Saint LaurelRORSCHACH THE ANTI HERO, CARMEN CASTILLO A.K.A CARMEN FRIA and MELTER SKELTER, with additional guitars by SERGE DE LEON.  There’s a lot to sift through and work with on this one, so definitely take a dive in, share it around, and support monetarily if you can.

Whispering Winds :: Discovering Freeze Frame And ‘Who’s The Man?

When the universe speaks, we’ve gotta learn to listen, as you never know what you might end up missing.  While searching Bandcamp for something new to post about, I came across Austin-based artist Freeze Frame, and I set his album aside to listen to later.  Later that day, OVRLD put out a call for albums and videos released in 2018 so that they can make sure they’re covering all of their bases, and first in the comments section was a music video by Freeze Frame for Who’s the Man?, released less than a week prior.  That was all I needed to take the dive, and I was certainly impressed.  Freeze Frame manages to capture his aesthetic (his two listed influences are Phillip K. Dick and Slick Rick) perfectly in the video, in my opinion.  Definitely check this one out, leave a like and a comment, and share it around.

Deep Rooted :: Chief And TheDoomsdayDevice Continues Escapism With ‘Southern Comfort’

a0090143629_10

One of my favorite things to do as someone with a modicum of a voice in the Austin hip-hop culture is to share other creators that I find high caliber and inspiring.  Doing this through mixes has always been a favorite way to do so, but it’s been a while since I dedicated time to doing so.  With so many talented acts from or based in Austin, it’s impossible to get them all in one sweep, so Escapism : Southern Comfort reaches for the vibey side of things… all of my peers are substance-based, but these are acts that I consider high style as well.  Direct peers like Riders Against the Storm (RAS)Cory KendrixanomPNTHNMC Homeless and Chris Condewallaby and bobbesDdotellesClick-Clack and more get shine alongside established acts with Texas roots like BROCKHAMPTON and Travis Scott.  I’m happy with this one, and hopefully folks dig it enough to spread it around!

Joyful Noise :: PNTHN Drops Another Banger With ‘Communion’

Screenshot_1

PNTHN is a movement… a machine that seems to have no intention on stopping with high level output.  At this point, is safe to consider anything with the PNTHN stamp on it to be gold.  Their latest single, Communion, takes a Por Vida beat and displays one of the most effortless group sequences of flows to date.  Everyone sounds right at home on this track, and yet, each performance is distinct from one another.  The performances also compliment one another, like a community build.  Even though they just dropped a project, I wouldn’t be mad at them for lacing us with another in early 2019, and I’ll definitely be there to support.  Check out this track, give it a like, comment and share, and support your local creatives, especially the ones that are making moves.

Mixed Emotions :: Chief And TheDoomsdayDevice Adds ‘Free Radical Thought’ To The ‘Escapism’ Mix Series

a3156441489_10

After what has been a very busy stretch, something around 8 – 10 weeks, I’ve finally found time to return to the Escapism mix series.  As usual, it’s heavy on the rhythm and heavy on the vibes, with an emphasis on favorites this time.  This set is very similar to what I do during my Escapism Plan weekly residency at Tantra Coffeehouse in San MarcosTexas.  If you find yourself in the area some Friday evening, stop by, and definitely check this mix out… plus share it with your friends.

Laid Back :: Kydd Jones Performs ‘Untitled’ For Bedstock 2018

While attending and performing at Austin City Limits Festival 2018, local hip-hop standout Kydd Jones of the LNS Crew took some time to stop by Bedstock 2018 for an intimate acapella performance of Untitled.  Bedstock, an event hosted by MyMusicRx, is a Cancer awareness movement where artists perform in a bed as a show of solidarity for children fighting Cancer that are stuck in a bed.  As the flagship program for the Children’s Cancer Association, the work that MyMusicRx does is important for educating and informing all sides on an illness that has made an impact on most all of us.  It’s good to see artists like Kydd take the time to align themselves with positive groups like this, as it shows a real awareness of how much weight their voices carry, and it can hopefully help in the efforts of finding cures and affordable treatment for all dealing with Cancer.

Cover Fire :: Henry + The Invisibles Takes A Swing At James Brown’s ‘Get Offa That Thing’

For a man as talented as Henry + the Invisibles, it’s surprising that he does not showcase his ability to do cover material more.  In an effort to bolster his set and raise the levels of engagement for what is already a top-notch live performance, however, Henry has decided to do just that, and expand his set list to a few funk and r&b standards.  He recently released a video of himself recording/performing the James Brown staple Get Offa That Thing, and if he’s able to come even remotely close to the energy he captured in a live setting, we’re all in for a treat.  Check it out for yourself, let him know what you think via comments, and be sure to like and share the video.
