Taking Lead :: Muff Releases Beautiful New Single, ‘Follow’

a0608324586_10

I recently have found myself listening to Austin/San Marcos outfit Muff‘s debut album on pretty much constant repeat.  It was already a favorite, and continued listens have only provided more pleasant surprises.  So imagine the most pleasant surprise of all occurring when, lo and behold, Muff announced they had new music in the works.  The latest single, Follow, is giving off some strong My Bloody Valentine vibes in all of the best ways possible.  The musicianship is top notch as usual, Rachel‘s lyrics/voice are as strong as ever, and it sounds like a million bucks.  I cannot wait for the follow-up album to arrive… here’s to hoping it is sooner than later.

Culture Elevated :: The Mic Fiends Unleash ‘Slang Lords’

a3172133627_10

Slang Lords, the debut collaboration from The Mic Fiends, is another perfect example of when two good elements combine to create something great.  StormShadow and Stress are both more than capable wordsmiths in their own right, but combined, these cats toss wordplay back and forth effortlessly over wisely chosen production.  The result is thought-provoking, head nod-inducing hip hop of the highest caliber.  Definitely not to be slept on.

Traveling Jams :: Salvasquared Drops ‘Epocas (Beat Tape)’

Recently, Salvasquared hit my inbox with a link to his latest project (and first instrumental release), Epocas (Beat Tape).  He described it as ‘beats created from musical samples originated from all over the world’, and the description definitely hits the nail on the head.  There are pieces of familiar elements in here, as well as ‘foreign’ elements (both in origin and to the ear), both of which give this album an extremely welcoming feel.  This is definitely escapism music… certainly worth your time.

Soulful Flows :: PDotflo Releases ‘PDotflo & AmAzin Vol. 1’

Not to be overly nostalgiac or anything, but sometimes, boom-bap rap is what the world needs.  I’m all for exploration of new sounds and styles… don’t get me wrong.  But sometimes, you’ve gotta take the foundation elements and explore that realm.  Dallas-based MC PDotflo is neck-deep in that exploration with PDotflo & AmAzin Vol. 1.  This is the music that is ‘dated’ in the best way possible, to where you pinpoint it in the wrong era.  The sounds are familiar, the style is comfortable, but the content and voice are unique.  The topics are timeless, and yet a direct reflection of what we are going through right now.  This is that kind of hip hop that feels like a family reunion.  Great stuff.

Prismatic Effect :: Ernest Gonzales Releases ‘Dreaming In Color’

One amazing thing about an Ernest Gonzales record is how much of a journey each listen is.  Many of us producers struggle to have our instrumentals be as vibrant and full of life as vocals on a song.  On the breathtaking Dreaming In ColorErnest Gozales makes each song take beautifully subtle twists and turns.  They unfold out of themselves, like a flower opening up to receive sunlight, and build into wonderfully playful expressions.  I highly recommend this album, and look forward to incorporating many of the songs into my DJ arsenal.  A sure fire winner from the Exponential Records camp.

Brief Introduction :: Ben Buck Has ‘Been Buck’

One of the 2016 bright moments was meeting Ben Buck at Beerland during The Triggermen‘s album release show.  I was familiar with the name, but knew nothing about him as an artist.  Needless to say, his wonderful balance of beats, bars and beatboxing blew my mind.  His latest release, Been Buck, is a collaboration with beatsmith supreme Dr. Bobby Banner, MPC.  It’s reminiscent of those early 90s hip-hop tracks where you were allowed to be honest about yourself, joke about yourself and be a little clever as well, before everyone started taking themselves way too seriously.  Good jam for sure, and I’m looking forward to a full-length project… hopefully sooner than later!

Common Ground :: Joey Alpha Celebrates That ‘It All Makes Sense Now’

Joey Alpha, one half of the vocals for Slop Muskt, is a good-hearted man.  If the lead single from his upcoming project Tales From A Drifter, the beautiful meditation on equality titled It All Makes Sense Now, is any indication of what’s to come, we will soon all have audio proof of his good nature.  The track is a reflection on making attempts to be inclusive with those of all races, colors and creeds.  Throw in the fact that the dynamite team behind DVZN Media spent some time with Joey Alpha in downtown Austin capturing performance footage and handing out snowcones to those willing to dance, and you’ve got yourself a memorable music video.  Now, more than ever, is when we need messages of this kind, so please be sure to share this one with your friends, and especially with those you may not see eye to eye with.

Connected Spirits :: DdotElles Drops ‘Dos Almas’

Not that DdotElles ever went anywhere, but my main man is gearing up for a seriously strong push for the end of 2016.  After releasing the highly entertaining documentary short efaDdotElles is back at the tracks with an extremely touching tribute to connections between souls that are bigger than any two individuals can understand.  And, as usual, he hits the nail on the head with the lyrics (and the signature film samples we’ve come to know and love his work for).  Toss in a production assist from Oktoe, and you’ve got one for the ages.  Props as always.

Shadow Dancing :: NGHT HCKLRS ’15 Min Facelift’ Will Blow Your Mind

Recently, I was booked to DJ a set for Angers Week in Austin via the OVRLD blog.  Several bands played that night, and all were good, but one band really caught me off guard in the best way possible.  I had seen the guys from NGHT HCKLRS throughout the night, but once they hit the staged, donned their get-up, and got to work, it was a whole new ballgame.  This YouTube video best captures the experience… dig it and share it.

Eternal Journeymen :: Ghost Palace Drops ‘Road To Nowhere (Still Running)’

a3509822475_10

You know how we do it.  There are a handful of artists and groups that get automatic shine upon the release of anything, and Ghost Palace sits high on that list.  Road To Nowhere (Still Running) is so new, in fact, that I’m sharing it prior to hearing it in its entirety.  However, with Progeny on the tracks and Evolve as the wordsmith, I doubt it will be anything less than stellar.  Dig it and dig it good.
