Think Globally :: Salvasquared and Usedtobe Connect For ‘SnowMelt’

Austin-based MC Salvasquared has taken the old-ish adage of ‘think globally, act locally’ to heart with his latest single and video, the Usedtobe-produced ditty that is SnowMelt.  Over a diverse-sounding, cultural mixing beat, Salvasquared talks about how the experience of seeing the world not only puts your home-realm into perspective, but it changes you mentally as well, sometimes erasing thoughts and issues that formerly held you back.  Though most of us are grounded per shelter-in-place rules, I agree with Salvasquared in regards to how seeing the world can improve your scope, and highly recommend travelling to those that are able when they are able.  As for this video, definitely leave a like and a comment, share it around for all to enjoy, and support your local wandering creatives!

Focus Group :: #DOOMpeerREVIEW Dedicates Episode To College Of Hip-Hop Knowledge

I’m a week late in sharing this one, but the fifth episode of #DOOMpeerREVIEW took a special focus on Austin‘s own College of Hip-Hop Knowledge (CHHK).  From their Austin Hip-Hop Awards cipher down to their extensive catalog of solo and group videos, the talent of the CHHK is undeniable.  Enjoy this episode, leave a like and a comment, share it around if you dig it, and stay tuned for future episodes, with more special episodes every fifth release!

High Times :: Lace Tunes Drops ‘Escobarbarian’

When it comes to dancing that fine line between funk and folk, my man Lace Tunes has it down to a science.  Not many rappers can genuinely carry that laid back, easy-going attitude in tandem with the ’bout it bout it’ lifestyle that Lace Tunes keeps alive and well.  With his latest project, Escobarbarian, we find Lace Tunes right back at it with the balance of singing and spitting rhymes that he does so well, as well as the proper subject matter we grown accustomed to : smoke, getting paid, and doing your thing in an unapologetic fashion.  Even if we can’t enjoy the summer the way we’re used to these days, rest assured that Escobarbarian is bonafide summer-jam-worthy.  Check it out wherever you get your music online, and share it around for all to enjoy!.

Resonance Rap :: Levi Deadman Goes Esoteric With ‘Patient Zero (Najar Media)’

For those of us that have been in shelter-in-place for what is pushing 9 months now, there are two (in my opinion) proper ways to approach it : circle and assess your creative wagons, or take the time for deep introspection.  It seems that Levi Deadman is on a similar page based on his latest single and video, Patient Zero (Najar Media).  Levi Deadman‘s new banger focuses on the impact his simple statement of being alive and aware can cause, and in the way that leaders do, the single serves as an example for others to follow.  Add a bit of down south, psychedelic, indie-level imagery to the mix, and you’ve got yourself a winner on all fronts.  Dig the video, leave a like and a comment if you enjoy it, and share it around for others to do the same.

Sample Dosage :: Poolboi Blu Preps For New Release By Releasing ‘Songs For Shinji’

Whenever poolboi blu decides he’s ready to be in album mode, it’s a blessing for us listeners, because that almost always means we get a handful of smaller projects before the inevitable big release.  This time around, the first volley is songs for shinji, a trio of tracks that I would not be surprised hearing on one of those YouTube 24 hour streaming channels of lo-fi beats.  The energy is higher while keeping a mellow mood, and the sound is popping out of the speakers large scale.  If this is a sneak preview of what’s to come, then I know we’ve got some high quality tune-age on the horizon.  Props to poolboi blu for remaining focused in such a turbulent time, as all of us stand to reap those sonic rewards.

Slow Vibes :: Mélat Makes ‘No Promises’

When I first got hip to Mélat a few years ago, I was immediately impressed by her unique look, and the way it juxtaposed against her more traditional approach to R&B music. As the years have gone by, Mélat continues to impress, and recently, she snuck a new song and video out to the internet with me being somehow completely unaware of it. No Promises, a slow burn about the give and take of a relationship, as well as the process of learning when to take someone’s word in a completely literal or symbolic context, definitely leaves a mark long after it’s complete. The colorful video is a bonus, pulling the viewer/listener into Mélat‘s world. Check out the video, leave a like and a comment if you dig, and share it around for others to do the same!

Beat Heat :: Ruler Why’s ‘1907 Beat Tape’ Now Streaming Everywhere

There’s a new Ruler Why collection of beats out, the 1907 Beat Tape, so you already know what time it is if you’re even remotely familiar with central Texas hip-hop.  It’s likely that your favorite bar-tician MC has collaborated with this cat, but in the rare event that you’re not hip to the level of masterful technician that Ruler Why can flex, then let his latest release serve as your entry point for immersion into a much larger world.  This bad boy is streaming everywhere and on all digital storefronts, so you already know what to do.

Punch Funk :: Kay Odyssey Swing Big With ‘Knockout’

Pecan Crazy Records has always been known as a haven for avant-garde artists in the central Texas area, but with Kay Odyssey‘s latest release, the label arguably has a hit on their hands.  The group perfectly describes their sound as one that ‘combines mesmerizing gorgeous vocals with a tough ass garage rock quartet sound–sometimes leaning raucous punk, other times beautiful and etherial, but always sincere, unique and eloquent’.  For my money’s worth, this is the kind of group I’d like to see open up for a band like Sleater-Kinney.  If this sounds up your alley, don’t hesitate… check it out, share it around, and throw the band a few bucks if you can afford to support!

Reluctant Power :: Jonas Wilson Reflects On ‘Ruling The World’

While some have delusional machinations of wealth, fame and influence, others are more than happy to just exist. Multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Jonas Wilson falls on the latter half of those groups, and if he didn’t have an ‘I’m just happy to be here’ anthem before, he’s certainly got one now in the form of Ruling the World, the lead single off of his upcoming full length project Science Fiction Post Blues. The song is full of lo-fi charm, which creates the perfect bed for Jonas to share his simple but powerful composition on finding balance as a spoke in the wheel. If you’re looking for a laid back, reflective summer jam, you’re in luck, and your search is over. Check it out, support if you can, and share it around for others to experience!

Facing Facts :: Evolve And JonesGotMusic Connect For ‘Moving Target (Running)’

Evolve is a cat known for direct, hard hitting rhymes, but for the most part, his subject matter tends to be more on the meta-side… he is one of the few rappers that raps about rap without sounding cliche’ or trite.  That being said, his latest collaboration with JonesGotMusic, a single titled Moving Target (Running), keeps the verbal wizardry alive while making the subject matter a bit more culturally relevant overall.  With social upheaval and police reform on the edge of everyone’s tongue, Evolve spins a set of stories as old as time about minorities, members of the counterculture, and their all-too-often rocky relationship with authority figures.  Check out the track, share it around if you dig it, and support if you can!
