Jam Session :: BoomBaptist Goes Big With ‘Boom Shakalaka’ Release

a3472445872_10

BoomBaptist has become a master of the album rollout over the past year or so, as the multi-faceted promotional campaign for The Vapor Caves proved.  Boom put his creative genius to use once again for the release of Boom Shakalaka, his latest solo release on (iN)Sect Records.  Anybody who knows Boom knows he loves basketball, with the legendary video game NBA Jams playing a large role in that love affair, so it makes complete sense that the aesthetic of Boom Shakalaka would be inspired by and centered around the game and its connected culture.  The music speaks for itself, with Boom‘s signature swing and drum patterns nesting the multitude of samples perfectly.  To crown the event, Boom even performed live from inside an NBA Jam cabinet :

Check it out all, cop some of that merch, and spread the word!

Joyful Noise :: Buzz N’ Bangs Release ‘Going Places’

a4005806761_10

April 20th is and always has been a day of celebration, and when it rolled around for 2020, it seems like Buzz N’ Bangs had an idea to make it extra special.  Fans of rock in the central Texas area had a reason to rejoice as Going Places hit the internet airwaves.  The duo captures all of their high energy and wonderful sense of humor on the project, dropping a collection of original songs and two covers that round out the proceedings.  After approaching nearly ten years on hiatus, it is certainly refreshing to know that the duo is alive and kicking, and hopefully the pair still has a few albums left in them.  If summer rolls around and we’re allowed to go outside again, don’t be surprised if you hear this one out in the streets.  Check it out, share it around for others to enjoy, and if you have a few bucks, go ahead and cop it.

Journey Men :: Special Guests Drop ‘No Hero’ Single

artworks-u8t5epxyp53jfzbd-wgkuzg-t500x500

For as many solo hip-hop artists and producers that Austin produces, it’s awesome to see the city embrace the practice of creating collectives, as it tends to truly bring out the best in most artists.  On separate occasions, Indubes and You F. Oh hit me up about their new collective project, Special Guests (with third member Bvck rounding out the lineup), and with the sense of urgency behind their messaging, I figured it’d be best to give it a listen.  The lead single, No Hero, is an interesting take on the self-reflective hip-hop song, with You F. Oh and Bvck substituting self-props and bravado for hard, honest looks at their journey thus far, their current trajectory, and something that falls in the middle ground between pride and regret.  Indubes bolsters the whole experience with a brooding, moody track over a driving drum break, adding emotional texture to the experience.  This is a lush lead-off single, and it definitely has me curious about the upcoming full-length album, so check it out if you haven’t already, leave a like and a comment, and spread the love by sharing!

Spring Cleaning :: Corduroi Drops ‘Wind Your Spring’ Project

For every released song or project you hear from most producers, it’s safe to assume that there are a few songs or projects that you don’t, as the process of making a coherent album usually involves cutting away more so than adding on.  Every once in a while, artists will find a way to take a look back during their forward momentum, and if we’re lucky, they’ll share some of those forgotten gems with us.  This was recently the case with Austin-based producer Corduroi, who decided to dig through tracks created between 2015 to 2020 in order to curate his latest release, Wind Your Spring.  If you’re a fan of his work, definitely don’t skip this one.

Soul Dedication :: Bjorn Vader Honors John Prine With ‘Prine Time’

With COVID-19 and Coronavirus racking up astonishing, mind-numbing and tragic numbers, news pours in of those who have passed away, and if death is nothing else, it is fair in who it chooses, despite fame or fortune.  In early April, the legendary singer/songwriter John Prine became one of those whose life was lost to the disease, causing a wave in the sea of grief among those who treasured his guitar playing and observant, poetic nature.  Producer Bjorn Vader, a fan of a wide span of musical genres, decided that an ode to Prine was necessary, and thus Prine Time was born.  The somber tune is built around guitar samples from Prine‘s Speed of the Sound of Loneliness, which makes the tune as beautiful as it is bittersweet.  Check it out, share it around for others to do the same, and take care of yourselves.

Props Session :: DoWrong Drops ‘Ambition’ Video

Austin mainstay DoWrong has never been one lacking the confidence to plant his flag as a top tier MC, and with his latest single Ambition, he’s got a proper anthem.  After connecting with Big&Little Productions, a video was made that shows how you can still have plenty of style and flash without a million cuts or locations.  The long take method works well, as it compliments the lyrical drive that DoWrong puts into the song, as well as the very memorable hook that stays with you after the track is done.  Check it out for yourself, leave a like and a comment if you dig it, and share it around to get the numbers up.

Sharing Session :: BoomBaptist Takes Over ‘Shelter In Caves’ With Birthday Beat Set

With BoomShakaLaka right around the corner, it’s no surprise that BoomBaptist took the opportunity to do a special solo set for episode two of Shelter In Caves.  After celebrating his birthday the day prior, Boom jumped online to share new and old tracks, answer questions, and generally bring entertainment to the multitudes of us forced to shelter in place.  The Vapor Caves host Shelter In Caves every Tuesday during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it streams everywhere, so check it out live if you can, and find a replay if you can’t!

Outsider Anthems :: DotdotDotdotDotdot Drops ‘Outlaw Country’ Single

m1000x1000

DotdotDotdotDot (pronounced Dot Dot Dot), the artist formerly known as DDotElles, has been cooking during his momentary hiatus from the limelight.  According to some of the conversations we’ve had, he’s planning on stepping back out into the spotlight with a handful of new musical, literary and film projects underway, and I’m here for it.  If Outlaw Country, his first single under the new moniker, is any indication of what’s to come, then us listeners and viewers are in for a long and wonderful ride.  The single is a bit of audio noir intertwined with some solid self-aggrandizing and empowering lyrics about learning to hone in during the isolation (self-imposed or otherwise) in order to continue to grow.  The description is a bit of an oversimplification, but honestly, songs like this are meant to be experienced, not talked about.  Check it out, share it around for others to do the same, and stay tuned for what DotdotDotdotDotdot has in store.
