Journey Men :: Special Guests Drop ‘No Hero’ Single

artworks-u8t5epxyp53jfzbd-wgkuzg-t500x500

For as many solo hip-hop artists and producers that Austin produces, it’s awesome to see the city embrace the practice of creating collectives, as it tends to truly bring out the best in most artists.  On separate occasions, Indubes and You F. Oh hit me up about their new collective project, Special Guests (with third member Bvck rounding out the lineup), and with the sense of urgency behind their messaging, I figured it’d be best to give it a listen.  The lead single, No Hero, is an interesting take on the self-reflective hip-hop song, with You F. Oh and Bvck substituting self-props and bravado for hard, honest looks at their journey thus far, their current trajectory, and something that falls in the middle ground between pride and regret.  Indubes bolsters the whole experience with a brooding, moody track over a driving drum break, adding emotional texture to the experience.  This is a lush lead-off single, and it definitely has me curious about the upcoming full-length album, so check it out if you haven’t already, leave a like and a comment, and spread the love by sharing!

Soul Dedication :: Bjorn Vader Honors John Prine With ‘Prine Time’

a2838073816_10

With COVID-19 and Coronavirus racking up astonishing, mind-numbing and tragic numbers, news pours in of those who have passed away, and if death is nothing else, it is fair in who it chooses, despite fame or fortune.  In early April, the legendary singer/songwriter John Prine became one of those whose life was lost to the disease, causing a wave in the sea of grief among those who treasured his guitar playing and observant, poetic nature.  Producer Bjorn Vader, a fan of a wide span of musical genres, decided that an ode to Prine was necessary, and thus Prine Time was born.  The somber tune is built around guitar samples from Prine‘s Speed of the Sound of Loneliness, which makes the tune as beautiful as it is bittersweet.  Check it out, share it around for others to do the same, and take care of yourselves.

Props Session :: DoWrong Drops ‘Ambition’ Video

Austin mainstay DoWrong has never been one lacking the confidence to plant his flag as a top tier MC, and with his latest single Ambition, he’s got a proper anthem.  After connecting with Big&Little Productions, a video was made that shows how you can still have plenty of style and flash without a million cuts or locations.  The long take method works well, as it compliments the lyrical drive that DoWrong puts into the song, as well as the very memorable hook that stays with you after the track is done.  Check it out for yourself, leave a like and a comment if you dig it, and share it around to get the numbers up.

Sharing Session :: BoomBaptist Takes Over ‘Shelter In Caves’ With Birthday Beat Set

With BoomShakaLaka right around the corner, it’s no surprise that BoomBaptist took the opportunity to do a special solo set for episode two of Shelter In Caves.  After celebrating his birthday the day prior, Boom jumped online to share new and old tracks, answer questions, and generally bring entertainment to the multitudes of us forced to shelter in place.  The Vapor Caves host Shelter In Caves every Tuesday during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it streams everywhere, so check it out live if you can, and find a replay if you can’t!

Outsider Anthems :: DotdotDotdotDotdot Drops ‘Outlaw Country’ Single

m1000x1000

DotdotDotdotDot (pronounced Dot Dot Dot), the artist formerly known as DDotElles, has been cooking during his momentary hiatus from the limelight.  According to some of the conversations we’ve had, he’s planning on stepping back out into the spotlight with a handful of new musical, literary and film projects underway, and I’m here for it.  If Outlaw Country, his first single under the new moniker, is any indication of what’s to come, then us listeners and viewers are in for a long and wonderful ride.  The single is a bit of audio noir intertwined with some solid self-aggrandizing and empowering lyrics about learning to hone in during the isolation (self-imposed or otherwise) in order to continue to grow.  The description is a bit of an oversimplification, but honestly, songs like this are meant to be experienced, not talked about.  Check it out, share it around for others to do the same, and stay tuned for what DotdotDotdotDotdot has in store.

Mental Stamina :: Mirage The Gr8 And Rex Gito Drop ‘Outta Mind’ Video

As the creative partnership between Mirage the Gr8 and myself continues, I’ve been lucky enough to stay busy with video edits on his music videos and other upcoming projects.  The latest video, a collaboration between himself and Rex Gito titled Outta Mind, came out very nice in my opinion.  Mirage and company gathered great shots in the Dallas area, including a series of stellar rooftop performance shots, which allowed me some artistic freedom and leaway in the edit suite.  This one is a strong final product, period point blank, so check it out, leave a like and a comment if you dig it, and share it around!

Sweet Nothings :: Poolboi Blu Drops ‘Flex With You’ Single

a0872624082_10

It’s been said before, and I’ll say it again : poolboi blu is always up to something, and always working towards something.  After dropping a trio of projects in the past 18sh months, you’d think that there would be some sort of low-key period, but poolboi blu is having none of that.  His latest single, Flex With You, is a mellow track with poolboi‘s version of R&B energy… propping someone up, showering them with gifts and affection, and making moves in tandem.  Like the lion’s share of his work, this one is on point, so definitely check it out, download it, leave a buck or two if you can, and share it around!

Fair Warning :: HeirMAX And Friends Release ‘Hole’ Single

22527998_1561261670602033_846992069881581042_n

Fort Worth-based MC heirMAX looks to be deep into the run-up for a new project, much to the delight of us underground hip-hop heads out here.  After a couple of singles dropped in March (which I will probably revisit next week for this blog), heirMAX is coming out swinging in April with a Moodie Black produced posse cut titled Hole.  This warning about checking your ego features verses from the homie MC Homeless and Cainam, each of whom drops a very direct set of bars about essentially learning to mind your own business and keeping your house in order while doing you as all of us attempt to rise.  Check out the track for sure, drop a buck or two if you can afford to, and share it around so others can do the same!

Vibrate Higher :: S.O.T.U. Drops ‘Cymatics’ Project

artworks-19646a3d-c4b6-4d9d-bd37-4df74d28cdae-0-t500x500

The College of Hip-Hop Knowledge (CHHK) continues to come with it in 2020.  After releasing a very forward-thinking and looking video for In A Zone, the duo of Sound of the Underground (S.O.T.U.), consisting of MCs The Culprit and Mic Trey, have come together to form a strong project in the form of Cymatics.  The production on the project gives off a slight 8Ball & MJG vibe, serving as a great foundation for the unexpected rapid fire flows that each MC brings to the table.  The styles each member utilizes balance well from song to song and against one another, and the subject matter covered has a range, giving the lyrics a multi-generational vibe in terms of topics covered.  You can find this project most anywhere, so check it out, share it around, and support your local creatives.

Rise Above :: Mirage The Gr8 Drops ‘Level Up’ Video

My continued working relationship with Mirage the Gr8 has really and truly been beneficial for both parties.  Mirage gets to see his ideas come to fruition, and I get to sharpen my tools as an editor.  One of the pieces of work I’m most proud of is Level Up, a collaboration between MirageTerrence Side Effect‘ Wood and Chip Lurk.  Originally, this video was meant to be exclusive content for an upcoming project we are working on, but in spite of everyone practicing social distancing and staying home, Mirage figured that now was the time to drop the video.  All parties involved are proud of this work, so definitely check it out, leave a like and a comment, and spread it around for others to do the same.
