Roll Call :: Coolzey And Co. Wrap Up VPC6 Contest With ‘Bring Out Your Nerd’ Posse Cut

Not too long ago, the homie Coolzey hit me up with an interesting proposition… 8 bars for a posse cut to help him lock down the final round for a contest known as VPC6, where Coolzey did multiple rounds of songwriting in hopes of achieving victory.  For the final round, Coolzey called in some big guns : A Billi Free, Chris Conde, Lil Lavedy, Ice Tha One, MC Animosity, iMPERFEKT, Beefy and myself (Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice) all turned in 8 bars to help make Bring Out Your Nerd a reality.  The end result is dope, and I’m personally proud of my verse, which is comprised solely of movie titles (almost all of which I own physical copies of).  Check out the track, and leave a vote to help Coolzey achieve victory!

Perfected Patience :: Apaso And Progeny Connect For ‘Sorry Not Sorry’

As 2020 rolls around, it’s crystal clear that San Antonio has no intentions of slowing down the output when it comes to hip-hop music, especially that which is produced by Progeny.  After dropping a new Chisme project, Progeny finds himself sharing the spotlight once again, this time with San Antonio heavyweight MC Apaso via a collaborative EP titled Sorry Not Sorry.  Over the course of the past 8 years or so, the duo collaborated on a series of tracks, and after testing the waters with the Chingona video, the pair have unleashed a solid effort via Sorry Not Sorry.  The production is dark and textured, providing plenty of sonic output for head nodding, while Apaso‘s smooth and assured delivery fits right in naturally.  This one is rock solid, so don’t sleep on it.  Check it out, share it around for others to do the same, and support if you can by purchasing!

Legendary Figures :: Michael Garcia And Co. Pay Tribute To A San Marcos Icon In ‘A Hole In The Wall’

Anyone who’s spent any amount of extended time in the San Marcos, Texas area over the past 40 years or so either knew or was aware of Eddie Mack, the notorious and outgoing owner of the Showdown Amusement Bar.  In A Hole In The Wall, a documentary created to pay tribute to the man, his bar, and the impact it left on the community, we are given insight into the effect that Mack had on people via candid interviews and archival footage.  His arrival to the town, the establishment of his bar, his local campouts that brought the community together and his passing are all examined and reflected upon, with sincerely powerful moments of raw emotion captured as those whose lives that Mack touched take the time to contemplate it.  This is certainly a documentary worth your time, so check it out, leave a like and a comment, and share it around for San Martians (and non-Martians, for that matter) to experience.

Instant Classic :: The Vapor Caves Drop Amazing Video For ‘Bitch To The Boys’

The Vapor Caves appear to have no intention of slowing down their upward trajectory as they head into 2020.  After a year full of successful buzzwork and a brilliant debut album, the duo is hitting the ground running with an instantly iconic video for Bitch to the Boys, one of my personal favorite cuts from a dynamite-filled project.  The video takes things to the extreme, with 80s style oozing throughout the wardrobe, vehicles, props and demeanor of all involved.  Thanks to the work of Side Label, the visual direction of Andrew Baird, dance choreography by Misa Soliz, visual effects from Orion Garcia and costuming from Mysidia and Never Over Vintage, plus a handful of cameos from some Austin familiar faces, us viewers have been blessed with what is almost guaranteed to be a viral success.  Dig it and dig it good, leave a like and a comment, and share it around for everyone to enjoy!

While not necessarily known for a high crime rate, Austin most definitely has its fair share of cats who can both talk that talk and walk that walk when it comes to hood moves.  When it comes to my personal preferences, no crew is representing that sound for Austin better than the League of Extraordinary G’z, and lately, the homie Dominican Jay has been putting out banger track after banger track.  The latest is another collaboration with $.Dot (who is quickly becoming another one of my favorite local MCs), and with the vocal assist from Sertified and a monster of a track from Ball Team, Dirty Money is another Austin anthem in the making.  Check this one out, as it’s most certainly worth your time and efforts, and if you dig it, leave a like and a comment, and share it around for others!

Comeback Kids :: Chisme Reconnects For ‘Still Breathing’

Not that they were ever actually ‘gone’, but after putting in work on individual efforts across a handful of states, Progeny and R.E.L. better known as Chisme, have put together their highly anticipated 5th release, Still Breathing.  While focusing on the aforementioned efforts, the two found time to travel and connect over the past couple of years to continue creating, and in all honesty, their individual growth has resulted in a collective sense of pride and confidence that jumps out of the speakers at the listener.  I can’t wait to see these cats start performing some of these tracks, as the album energy is infectious, the lyrics dance around the textured tracks, and anyone not nodding their head is either fronting or deaf.  Dig it, share this one around for others to do the same, and support your local creatives!

Props Party :: College Of Hip-Hop Knowledge (CHHK) Drops Cypher For Austin Hip-Hop Awards

Tall Kyle, Big Mic, JSun the Prophesor, Big Tree, Sill, Mic Trey, The Culprit (with a special guest) and Kartune recently got the call from the Austin Hip-Hop Awards to create a cypher in the vein of the BET Awards, and to nobody’s surprise, the crew did not disappoint.  For any successful cypher, you need a banger of a track, and the high energy A$AP Ferg track East Coast served as the perfect platform for the collective of talented MCs to drop bar after bar after bar, with tons of historical, mythical and cultural references intertwined among an a vast array of styles and deliveries.  I love what the CHHK is doing for hip-hop at large, and for Austin-based MCs in particular, as it’s allowed a handful of promising individuals with raw talent to transform into the seasoned performers confident enough to present a cypher of this caliber.  If the past few years have been any indication, CHHK will be making big moves this year, so definitely stay connected with them for more dope output.

Moving Parts :: Warm Star Kicks Off 2020 With ‘(mixtape)*’

Austin never fails to impress me with the sheer range and variety of producers and beatmakers that reside in the area.  No matter what your taste is, someone is definitely making tracks that will speak to your sensibilities.  If you’re a fan of slightly glitchy, wonderfully off-kilter tracks that warp samples into new elements that are interwoven together intricately, then Warm Star most certainly has you covered.  On (mixtape)*, Warm Star hits us with a dose of Prefuse73-esque vibes over two tracks that had me in the zone, for real.  Definitely looking forward to hearing more from (and possibly collaborating with) Warm Star in the future, but for not, you should jump on this while you can… and if you can donate a buck or two, you should.
