Inspired Intertextuality :: Kal.Kal And Alcoda Combine For ‘The Authoritative Kal.Kal. And Alcoda’

a1451261378_10

There’s something special about inspiration and homage in the creative world that can inform an artist in ways that result in beautiful creations.  I’m not sure what has caused the recent spike in style influenced by the old comic strips of Calvin & Hobbes (honestly, my love for the strip has never waned), but the results have been some of the most wonderfully forward thinking yet nostalgia-inducing projects of late.  One of the latest is the mesmerizing The Authoritative Kal.Kal and Alcoda, a collection of downtempo gems from producers Kal.Kal and Alcoda (with a lovely album cover by De’Angelo Galvan).  Grab your favorite Calvin & Hobbes anthology, your headphones, and dive headfirst into this one.

Verbal Revival :: Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice Calls In Bernichus For ‘Old Time Religion’

29216707_1583137171723792_7482426559752568832_n

I’ve been hard at work on A Memoir Called Noir for a long time.  I’ve probably been working on Old Time Religion for a good 16 months or so.  I knew from the moment this song started to take shape, however, that I wanted Bernichus on the track.  His vocal timbre, wit and delivery, in my opinion, were a perfect match for closing out the track.  Recently, Bernichus laced me with his recorded verse (shout out to Chris Boasso for the engineering assist) and I liked it so much that I decided to leak the track prior to the upcoming release of the full length album (stay tuned for details on that).  If you dig the track, give it a like, share or comment, and hopefully this album lives up to expectations… I’m very happy with it, and ready to share it.

Real Talk :: The Negro Problem Podcast Comes To An End… For Now

18010094_374883562912555_2416856207399508389_n

All good things must come to an end.  TajiRyan and Cody, the team behind The Negro Problem podcast, recently had to face this fact as they gathered for what seems like the last time for the unforeseeable future.  No spoilers here though… in order to find out why they’ve come to the end of the road, and to find out what the future holds for each member of the team, you’ll have to tune in for yourself.

Viral Vibes :: Shelly Knicks Drops ‘Internet Rapper’ Video

Texas-based hip-hop artist Shelly Knicks packs a powerful punch in just under 2 minutes with his latest single, Internet Rapper.  The song is a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek look at how the internet can skew perspectives and inflate egos in subtle but powerful ways.  The video has a slightly off-kilter vibe to it with the color grading used, the computer style text and word bubbles, and even the meme-like behavior conveyed by Knicks and crew.  The video is a dope one for sure, so give it that like, share and comment treatment it deserves.

Rough Housing :: Poolboi Blu Drops The Long Anticipated ‘Horseplay’ EP

a4258548466_10

poolboi blu knows how important it is to keep pumping out new material, and for that new material to push your sound forward.  Without growth, there’s no reason to keep up with the artists that we love and support.  horseplay finds poolboi blu getting extremely comfortable with his sample usage over rhythms that are both upbeat and airy.  Many of the samples are familiar and bring a smile to my face, but the way that they are mixed in gives them a haunting feel.  horseplay is a good course adjustment after the extremely solid chocolat, and it is a good indicator of more positive output in the future.

Beautiful Music :: Those Nights Release ‘Fine Line’

28577090_1778441678879915_2195582976024174393_n

Some bands defy convention and the ability to be labelled, and the San Marcos-based band Those Nights is a shining example of this.  The band wavers between folk, soul, R&B, pop, rock, jazz and even hip-hop influences, and their songs always have a sense of urgency and purpose to them.  Their latest offering, Fine Line, is another strong collection of songs, and one that could potentially thrust the group into a higher level of recognition.  Definitely grab this one off of their website or stream it via your favorite service, as this is good music transcendent of any local tag you can hang on it.

Air Time :: Manners Stops By KTSW 89.9 For Studio C Sessions

If there’s one thing that San Marcos will never run out of, it’s bands.  You can barely throw a rock without hitting someone that contains enough talent and personality to hold a crowd’s attention.  Manners is one of the groups that, over the past year or so, has stayed vigilant and managed to make a name for themselves.  Because KTSW 89.9 understands the importance of giving props where props are due, the band was recently invited to bless Studio C Sessions with a performance of their song Creeps.  Check it out, stay in tune to KTSW 89.9 and in line with what Manners are keeping up to, and always support local.

Brutal Honesty :: More Talk Time With DDotElles And Lit Up AV

You know what it is.  DDotElles, the Austin hip-hop version of The World’s Most Interesting Man, took some time to chop it up with Lit Up AV.  On this particular snippet, we get to hear my man speak on hip-hop as a culture, genre and subgenre classification, and the art of knowing you’re great while recognizing there’s a time and place for your particular style of expression.  Enjoy, like, share, and leave a comment!

Mobbing Deep :: Camo Crew Drops ‘Who Is It?’ Single

Back in the day, the Austin hip-hop vibe was heavy with collaborative efforts… Mirage 512 and Tee Double used to connect regularly, Bavu Blakes first cut his teeth with Reelaktz, and Da’Shade Moonbeam famously came up via DKC / Off The Block.  Therefore, even though the city nowadays has a tendency to clique up rather than build as a united front, solo MCs occasionally still link up for crew projects.  The old school homie Profit-Z hit me up with a track from his partners Camo Crew featuring bars from himself, Mista Wyte and Legion D. Wise, with the production assist from OSKAR MIKE (Anno Domini Beats).  Definitely check it out, give it a comment, like and share, and keep supporting local hip hop!

Mister Manners :: Click-Clack And Ballteam Drop ‘Pretty Please’ Single

Screenshot_1

Once again, you gotta give it up for Click-Clack… ever since he and his collaborative team of producers unleashed their Ballteam branding, the already stellar music has taken an even higher jump in terms of quality and heart.  Pretty Please is an abstract, open-hearted testimonial of a track set to a beat that will get your body moving.  Click-Clack has been running the singles game for a couple of years now… I’m definitely ready to see what he has in store for upcoming albums, and where (if) some of these singles will find eventual placement.
