New Nostalgia :: Curbside Jones Drops A Dart With ‘Sitting Gorgeous In My Fortress’

a1964979665_10

There used to be this range of time in hip-hop, I’d say from about 1992 to about 1997, where ‘backpack rap’ was at one if its apex points… hip-hop artists from every region where flexing strong in both the lyrical and production realms, and despite being overshadowed by gangsta rap in the mainstream, this movement helped solidify and bolster the culture.  Curbside Jones recently dropped a sneak preview single from his latest installment of the Milk Tea Chronicles titled Milk Tea Chronicles : Madsheepery, and the vibe it gave me put me right back in that headspace.  The cool thing about it, however, is that the whole vibe is updated in terms of references (vibranium, SKRRRRRT, etc.) and production style (DeJohn Linward provides a lo fi beats to study to vibe with a bit of teeth behind it), and even the cover and installment title give visions of Madlib and MF Doom, both of whom continue to reposition the bar in regards to quality hip-hop.  If this single, Sitting Gorgeous In My Fortress, is an indication of what Madsheepery has in store, consider me sold.

Global Position :: META Drops New Visual For ‘WYA?’

Over the past year or so, I’ve gotten the chance to check out META via his building with my homie poolboi blu.  The connection between San Marcos and Corpus Christi has been strong, and it seems that META is definitely thriving, both in Corpus and in his ventures elsewhere.  His latest video, WYA?, is a celebration of this movement, and a call for other artists to step up their games so that everyone is motivated to keep rising.  PRODUCE® and CC Visuals add flair to the video, and with an El Dusty track to work with, META effortlessly rides the beat with his energetic flow.  This video is money, so be sure to like and comment on it, and spread it around so others can do the same.

Funky Dividends :: Poolboi Blu Drops ‘Shmoney’

a2009000329_10

If feels like poolboi blu just blessed us with ANTSY, but clearly, he is not one to rest on his laurels.  After ‘taking January off’ like a lot of us creatives did (taking the month off being tongue in cheek, as we were still putting in work), poolboi blu is back in full swing for February with a follow-up track drop to his latest entry in the sincere mix series.  The track, shmoney, is a Cardi B flip with the distinct characteristics of both the sampler and the sampled present.  As a bit of a bonus, the mutual homie Red Comet stepped up with a video flip as well that perfectly suits the track.

Check out both of these gems, do the appropriate amount of downloading, commenting, sharing and all that, and don’t forget to support your local creatives!

Stimulated Stems :: The Vapor Caves Share Remixes Of ‘The Chase’

After a successful start to the year, The Vapor Caves decided to have a little fun by making the stems for their single The Chase public and available for producers to remix.  Several notable talents stepped up to the challenge, and The Vapor Caves have set about making a playlist to collect them all like Pokemon.  So far, Butcher BearDJ LADDDADJ Boozwa and the Nodes of ThoughtMadd WikkidMulti-Tracker and even myself have gotten in on the act, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more on the list by the time this post goes public.  I’ll definitely be following this playlist, and I even have a few producers in mind that I think could make dope remixes, so you should probably stay tuned as well.

Street Spirits :: Old Man Skateboards Drops ‘JOBS? YES PLEASE!’

Jansen Newcum of Old Man Skateboards has been putting in mad work in the world of skateboarding in order to turn what became an interest into a possible profession.  As anyone knows, one of the key elements of the skate world (when it comes to making a name for yourself) is the skate part, and after nearly three years of stepping things up, OMS and crew have dropped JOBS? YES PLEASE!, a celebration of improving your skills in street spots, no matter the weather.  Newcum is joined by Josh HarnellLaurent Lemecier and Mike Cooke as they take to all of the curbs, banks, gaps and parking bumpers they can find while kicking out flatground tricks and making lines.  Definitely inspirational stuff.  Check it out, give it a like and a share, and leave a comment on what tricks you wanna see the OMS crew attempt next!

Paying Homage :: The Vapor Caves Tackle ‘Sour Times’ Cover

a4276202948_10

The Vapor Caves just made a move showing how in tune they are with their past… a smart move, as they’ve recently more than proven the future is covered.  This homage to the past came in the form of a cover of Portishead‘s seminal classic Sour Times, realeased 25 years ago and forever changing the pop music landscape.  The Vapor Caves are either unaware of how daunting a task this cover is, or they don’t care, as they definitely make one worthy of our ears, hearts and minds.  Dig it and dig it good, share it around, and stay tuned, because I can guarantee there will be more news about The Vapor Caves sooner than later.

Collected Works :: Gost Continues The Work With ‘Vol. 2’

avatars-000306752171-zjuatn-t500x500

My man Gost has a clear gameplan in mind it seems, and that plan is to significantly step his status level up in the near future.  Step one has emerged in the form of what appear to be a series of EP length volume releases, with Vol. 2 being the latest installment.  The beats on this one have that classic hip-hop feel, and Gost spits bars about (and with) pure confidence as he speaks on living your dreams and fulfilling your potential.  This is music with a positive message behind it that will still bump in the whip, so don’t sleep.

Silent Wars :: Hyder Makes Moving Video For ‘Farewell’

Austin-based hip-hop artist Hyder is clearly here to raise the bar of what both an artist and an artistic statement can be.  The former poet turned MC is obviously comfortable taking on topics with weight, as he exhibits in Farewell by effortlessly espousing on the trials and tribulations we face from within and without as we attempt to navigate an often stressful and trying world.  The raw honesty captured in both the song and the video are moving, and the high quality of the video heightens the entire experience.  Definitely check this one out, like and comment on it, and share it around.

a4226237059_10

You already know what it is.  poolboi blu drops a new volume in the sincere series, and folks should take notice.  For sincere (volume 007)poolboi blu decided to focus on diversity even more so than usual, in terms of tempo, tone and cut selection.  The result is another seamless mix, but one with plenty of dynamics, and not just for flash, but rises and falls that take you on a bit of a journey through a handful of newer songs and current favorites.  If you haven’t been lucky enough to catch poolboi blu live lately, or if you’ve just been stuck on Antsy, don’t sleep on sincere (volume 007), because the series is alive and well.

Heat Check :: Kenny Casanova Drops ‘HONESTLY, FUCK IT’ EP In Anticipation Of A Big Year

artworks-000485229900-idtlxm-t500x500

PNTHN is at the starting point of making major moves in 2019, and the cool thing about being a member of a crew is that these opportunities allow individual members to strike while the iron is hot.  Kenny Casanova has been cooking up a solo project for a moment now, and while doing some recent hard drive cleanup, he decided to throw together a few loose tracks as a taste tester for the full project.  HONESTLY, FUCK IT may not be the project, but it definitely has enough energy and personality to make a run on its own.  Kenny drops a handful of different styles over some short but memorable bangers, making a nice collection of mixtape-worthy tracks that folks like myself will definitely be peppering into our mixes.  Check out the project, keep an eye on Kenny and PNTHN while they continue to make bigger and bigger moves, and always support your local creatives.
