Youth Explosion :: Weird Rap Discussion Gang Studies The Timeline Of Kid Rappers

Be it the gimmicky New Jack Swing mimicry of the early 1990s, the edgier rebellious juvenile rap of the late 1990s, the party-pop sound of the new millennium, or the modern day mini-versions of adults, hip-hop has a long history of child acts with varying degrees of success.  In true Weird Rap Discussion Gang fashion, the crew of Th’MoleBeverly Fre$h and myself took a trip down memory lane and discussed how we feel about the growth of kid rap.  This one was a little different than usual, but like always, it was a ton of fun and relatively insightful, so definitely set aside some time to check it out!  If you like what you see, leave a like and a comment, and if you find yourself thirsting for more Weird Rap content, subscribe to the channel and check out the official website, weirdrap.com.

Taking Flight :: Andwan Zonez Taps Maikéru For ‘Jets & Planes’

Over the past couple of weeks, Maikéru has been doing major promo for Jets & Planes, a single and video he featured on with Andwan Zonez.  The hype that he built up for it was major, and like everything else that he’s pushed recently, the quality stood up to the promise.  The track is a well-produced mixture of R&B, hip-hop and club energy, and thanks to the well-known talents of videographer, director and editor extraordinaire Dan2TheL, the video looks as high quality as the track sounds with its vivid color displays and late 1990s/early 2000s aesthetic.  In all honesty, not following Maikéru at this point is taking a social media L, as he continues to get himself involved in interesting and top notch content.  Check out the video, leave a like and a comment if you dig it, and share it around to run the numbers up!

Bustin’ Loose :: Jsun The Prophesor And Levi Deadman Combine Forces For ‘Hektek’

We are definitely living in tense times nowadays, especially here in Texas on the eve of Constitutional Carry implementation.  Jsun the Prophesor, one of the driving forces behind the Austin hip-hop supercollective CHHK (College of Hip-Hop Knowledge), seems to clearly understand how normal and performative this collective madness is, and lucky for us, so does Levi Deadman.  With the help of South Side Hippie on production, the result of these ruminations is Hektek, the second single and video off of Jsun‘s upcoming album 9th Symphony.  Definitely check out the single and video, leave a like and a comment if you’re feeling it, and share it around so everyone can get hip!

Shadetree Deconstruction :: James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ Inspires New #DOOMonFILM Video

After several years of running the DOOMonFILM blog over at Tumblr, where I spent my time reviewing and analyzing a wide spectrum of films from over the years, I found myself mostly fulfilled, but yearning to include video essays in my creative fold.  With the time afforded to many of us during 2020, I decided to pull the trigger on DOOMtubeATX, my YouTube channel that I hope will eventually showcase a number of different series I plan to create.  DOOMtubeATX afforded me the opportunity to add the visual element to my film analysis (as previously mentioned), and its times like this past weekend that I appreciate having committed myself to DOOMtubeATX.  I watched James Gunn‘s latest release, a refresh on The Suicide Squad, the Thursday night that it premiered early.  Then I watched it again Saturday.  And again on Sunday.  By the end of my third watch, the gears were turning, and the result is what you see above : a dissection of the Antivillian concept, with Ratcatcher 2 (depicted by actress Daniela Melchior) as the case study.  If you’re in to overanalyzing the movie viewing experience, or you’re simply open to a fresh take that could shift your perspective, then check out the video!  Leave a like and a comment if you feel moved to do so, and subscribe to the channel if you’d be interested in checking out future content.

Kingly Things :: MIRAGE THE GR8 Captures Austin Attitude During Atlanta Visit For ‘Regal’ Video

Longtime friend and collaborator MIRAGE THE GR8 recently took a trip to Atlanta, and with it having been close to a decade (if not a bit longer) since I’ve been there, I was definitely locked in to his shares and living vicariously through his vacation time.  It came as no surprise to me that MIRAGE returned home and quickly dropped Regal, a single and music video featuring moments from his visit, as MIRAGE is always working (even when he’s relaxing).  The video captures MIRAGE representing Austin to the fullest via his 78723 Worldwide and Oficionado clothing lines, all the while rapping about possessing an elevated mindstate over a track by The Infamous O’Dawg of the Flying Iron Soul Collective.  It’s always a pleasure to see the homie MIRAGE put in work and produce content, so being able to share this particular piece of art is a joy.  Be sure to like and share the video, leave a comment if you’re feeling it, and always support your local creatives!

Catching Up :: A Wave Of Content From Kydd Jones

Cats are making it hard to keep up this summer!  Above is the music video for TV On, a recent Kydd Jones drop that I posted about near the end of June.  Since this time, Kydd has not only dropped that video, but he has released five singles that I have yet to cover on the blog.  I believe that he’s dropping music on a weekly basis every Friday, so when this post goes live there will likely be a new song out, but if you click any of the five embed links below I’m sure you’ll find it :

Summer Madness :: SniperShot & Flotation Connect For ‘Laid Back’

When you think about summer, what comes to mind?  Kicking it with the homies at the skatepark?  If so, then SniperShot and Flotation have a surprise for you in the form of Laid Back, the recently released single and video from the duo.  Both of these guys have held it down for the Dallas hip-hop scene for years, so seeing them combine forces (along with a visual assist from RSNL Media DFW) is always welcome.  Drop a like and a comment on the video, and if you’re really feeling the track, cop it from the streamable embed below :

Masked Motivation :: Heir MAX Visualizes MF Doom Tribute Via ‘Exclamation Mark’

Here we are, nearly ten months removed from the death of iconic hip-hop figurehead MF Doom (eight months if you are counting from the date of the death announcement), and many of us are nowhere closer to coming to terms with this monumental loss.  To be fair, 2021 has not been easy on hip-hop fans, with Doom‘s passing marking the first of several iconic members of the hip-hop community passing away, but with Doom standing as ‘your favorite MC’s favorite MC’, it will be a long time before the masses are able to move on.  That being said, his legend is being kept alive by artists like heir MAX, who recently dropped a video for Exclamation Mark, one of the tracks off of his tributary MAX DOOM Mixtape.  The video, directed by Murdered, is a straight-forward affair, with heir MAX dropping his testimonial while donning the MF Doom mask as bits of his fictionalized discovery of the masked interspersed throughout.  If you’re a fan of MF Doom, or just someone who respects a proper tribute, then check out the video, leave a like and a comment, and share it with other hip-hop fans and lovers.

High Drama :: Drake Howard Releases ‘Amphibians’ Short Film

It’s hard to go a day in Austin without running across some creative output that one of my many talented friends put together or were involved in.  Recently, my old friend, past college peer and fellow thespian/musician Tricky Jones posted a link to Amphibians, a short film she starred in with Devin Finn, who also shared a directing credit with Drake Howard.  For a single location film, the journey is quite the captivating and vivid one, with Jones and Finn turning in performances full of dramatic and emotional range, not to mention some stunning lighting and a visual trick or two that elevates the gravitas of the material outside of the singular location.  Writer (and fellow former college peer) Casey Wimpee turns in a wonderfully poetic and ever-evolving script that gives our performers plenty to chew on, and with the dedication credit to Jeremy Torres punctuating the end of the journey, the weight of the entire affair was not lost on me.  Don’t sleep on this one… give it a watch, give it a like and a comment, and share it around for all to see!
