Prodigal Prodigy :: Nosaprise Returns With ‘Vamanos’

Screenshot_1

There are artists that are able to step away from the spotlight for a while, but are never truly gone.  Houston-based visionary Nosaprise is definitely one of those artists.  As his musical career was beginning to take off, Nosaprise suddenly found inspiration in several other aspects of his life that required immediate attention.  After yoga afforded him an opportunity to travel the world, and after successfully beginning a family, Nosaprise was able to bring all of that worldly knowledge gained back to his musical craft.  His music was always compelling, but now there is a growth and a depth to it that only awareness of the larger world and larger consciousness can bring… with his latest single Vamanos he is bravely experimental, bold in his statements, and thought-provoking in his delivery.  Hopefully this is just a taste of what lies ahead for Nosaprise, as his return is very welcome.

Upward Bound :: Cameron Elise Releases ‘Home To The Hounds’ In Memory Of Merlin Luck

Even in our times of glory, tragedy can strike.  It is on us to determine how we accept these tragedies, how we process them, and how we move forward.  Cameron Elise, currently in the process of recording songs for an upcoming project, took a moment to commemorate the recent passing of San Marcos-based bluesman Merlin Luck via Home to the Hounds, a somber ode to making sure you leave as strong an impact as you can before you move on.  The song not only serves as a tribute to a man who left it all on the stage every time he played, but as a reminder to the rest of us to do the same while he have the opportunity to.

Seismic Sounds :: Bird Peterson And Shack Baker Drop ‘Floor Shaker’

Bird Peterson is the man right now… there appears to be no end in sight to his continual rise and his constant stream of quality output.  Bird recently announced the upcoming release of his new album Infinity Molasses, and to put a ripple in the waters so that waves can be created, he’s dropped the single Floor Shaker.  Bird‘s production sets the table for Shack Baker to lyrically serve the listeners, then Bird jumps back in and builds up the track to a wonderful release, allowing Shack to show us the way out and back to our everyday lives.  If Floor Shaker is an indication of what Infinity Molasses will be, I think I’m ready for the ride.

Personal Touch :: Poolboi Blu Displays Remix Skill With ‘Pikachu’ Single

The weekend is almost upon us, and nothing can help boost your weekend like good tunes.  The homie poolboi blu is hip to this fact, so he stays dropping mixes, new tracks, and on occasion, remixes.  This go-round, he’s taken Vai Toma by MC Pikachu and turned it into a fun, bouncy track (one that he’s been integrating into the live sets quite effectively lately).  It’s hard to hear this song and not smile just a little bit at least.  Give it a listen, a comment, and a share to help boost those stats, and keep supporting your favorite local creatives.

Upward Momentum :: Fort Never Drops ‘Fly High’ Video

Alejandro Jodorowsky would be proud of Fort Never.  The group, known for their deeply emotive and thought-provoking music, decided to take on the monumental task of making the music video for Fly High an homage to the cult classic The Holy Mountain,  and I’m here to tell you that they did it justice.  The track is moving, with its heavy percussion, chanting and soul-stirring sitar work, all wonderfully supporting Chantell Moody‘s lyrics about learning to let go of the steering wheel and let fate be the pilot.  For a band with such a small video catalog at the moment, the strides they are making from video to video are making that catalog quite the formidable one.  Definitely a video of the year contender.  Props to Fort Never and Travis Hoggard, director of the video, for their stellar work.

Making Waves :: Red Comet Enlists Poolboi Blu For ‘Wavy’

Watching poolboi blu ascend the ladder of success has been fun.  The last few times I’ve been through his spot, he’s played me tracks and spoke of plans for upcoming songs and projects.  Even when he’s laying out the gameplan, however, he keeps a few things to himself so that the element of surprise is not eliminated.  That’s why when I noticed he produced a single for Red Comet, the incredibly infectious Wavy, it caught my attention.  Red Comet was spitting, and the beat was hitting, then poolboi stepped to the mic with some solid bars of his own.  Needless to say, I was impressed all the way around.  Check this one out, because I think it just found its way into the Doomsday mix cycle.

Opening Statements :: Manners Releases Debut EP

a0311270352_10

After putting in a year or two of solid gigging and songwriting, the San Marcos-based trio Manners has finally released their debut project, a self-titled EP.  The 5-song collection showcases the band’s ability to write songs that are cutting in their introspection while still maintaining a tone of humor (albeit it, a very sharp humor).  The band has a playful energy, but the songs focus on topics such as promiscuity, self-doubt at the expense of putting someone on a pedestal, trust and heavy hitters of that nature.  The garage-rock feel of the recordings make the songs connectable due to their honesty and rawness.  For a debut project, Manners shows a lot of potential for the band… hopefully it leads to future projects.

Strange Love :: Click-Clack And Ballteam Keep It Coming With ‘Skranger Things’

On a national scale, the music scene may be anticipating Pusha T‘s Surgical Summer, but Ballteam and Click-Clack are looking to turn the Austin hip-hop scene into Ballteam Season for the summer.  The collective keeps dropping banger after banger at a breakneck pace, the latest being Skranger Things.  The song is infectious as hell, with it’s synthesizer loop-based and 808 heavy track (the synthesizer I’m sure was an influence on the track name).  Click-Clack part raps, part sings his way through a persistent statement of letting the girl at the focus of the song know that he can make whatever she wants happen more so than other guys can, but she has to make it known.  Props on the Lucas artwork for the cover.  You know the drill… share this around so that the numbers on the track can reflect the dopeness.

Episodic Nature :: Virgil Wolfe And Strcolctr Connect For ‘Filler Episode’

a1778243117_10

Virgil Wolfe proves time and time again that he is not content with resting on his laurels.  Almost exactly half a year after releasing the insightful and thought-provoking Calamity produced collaboration Before The World Wakes UpWolfe is already talking up his next release, Unlimited TV Dinners.  The project, slated for a June 30th release, is an EP length collaboration with producer Strcolctr, and if the lead single Filler Episode is any indication of what’s to come, it sounds like we’re going to get our insight via clever analogies and imagery this go-round.  I’m not used to hearing Wolfe on the type of production that is Filler Episode, with it’s laid back nature and extremely heavy swing, but I gotta say that I dig what he’s laid out.  Here’s to hoping that Unlimited TV Dinners is another step in the right direction.

Mellow Masterpiece :: Poolboi Blu Keeps The ‘Sincere’ Momentum Going With ‘(Volume 004)’

33965322_1961418483868150_611092808777859072_n

You’d think with the summer heat on the horizon, poolboi blu would be ratcheting up the vibes, but on his latest mix of his soon to be iconic series, sincere (volume 004)poolboi opts for a mellower set of songs.  The R&B jams that open the mix are a refreshing change of pace, and when the bars start dropping it’s like ‘the party was already going, so why not invite a few more friends?’  I’m always going to be ready and on the lookout for a poolboi mix, and he certainly hasn’t let me down yet.  For those catching this post while it’s relevant, you can catch poolboi blu and myself doing 2X4 DJ sets this Thursday at Buzzmill San Marcos, and this Friday at Tantra Coffeehouse (San Marcos).  Don’t sleep.
