Soul Searching :: Spy Coastal Drops New Video For ‘Ceiling Fan’

Spy Coastal popped up on my radar a few months back, and I’ve definitely been anticipating more from them.  Lately, they collaborated with Kamaryn Troung, Sail Club Co to creative visuals for the methodically soulful and introspective song Ceiling Fan, and the end results are high quality.  As the duo showcases their style and swagger over a series of aged visual vignettes, Dama Nilz drops cryptic observations on those doing their best to achieve the uphill battle that is making enough to survive (let alone thrive) on top of Dat Boy Craig‘s bluesy beat, with DJ Brown 13 adding the perfect touch of scratches to put the hip-hop cherry on top.  This is definitely worth checking out and spreading around, so make sure to do so!

Kindred Spirits :: Click-Clack And Swish Fifty Drop ‘Negars’ EP

artworks-000556802418-db68fq-t500x500

Click-Clack and Swish Fifty have been building a strong working relationship over the past couple of years via a few Click-Clack releases and their affiliation with Ballteam, but Negars marks what (I believe) is their first consistent collaboration as a duo.  With Swish handling production duties and both members on lyrical duty, this self-titled EP comes out in attack mode and doesn’t let up for its 5 track duration.  The beats all hit hard, the braggadocios, humorous lyrical wordplay is present from both sides, and the cover art is instantly classic.  In a summer full of dopeness, this already sits near the top of the list.  Check it out and spread it around!

Best Life :: Poolboi Blu, Sincere (Volume 009) And Living The Good Life

artworks-000556602573-0bpimp-t500x500

poolboi blu has a lot to celebrate these days… his show schedule has been busy, the latest Faylita Hicks release was exclusively produced by him, he has new merch available for the summer, and poolblu.com recently went live.  poolboi blu has always been one to spread the goodness around, and it seems his idea of celebrating this latest wave of good would be via the release of the latest mix in his now iconic series, sincere (volume 009).  There’s been a bit of mellowness on the last few mixes, but for the most part, this one is a bit more high energy.  Otherwise, it’s up to par with all that you’d expect from the series… on point track selections, clean mixes and transitions, and it’s long enough for you to vibe to while being short enough to leave you anticipating the next volume.  The sincere series seems here to stay, as does poolboi blu, so do yourself a favor and get hip (if you’re not already).

Summer Trip :: Luvweb Drops ‘Mp3’ EP

artworks-000554760408-k6kt08-t500x500

In my ever-continuing efforts to only poach minimally from OVRLD (an awesome blog that you should all be checking out), I ran into Luvweb‘s latest release, an EP titled Mp3.  The production on this album is killer… I haven’t heard an album that sounds made for headphones in the manner that this one is for quite a while.  I would talk about this album, but the best this that I can say about it is that you should DEFINITELY give it a listen.  If you dig it, encourage others to do the same, so we can see what a new LP would sound like from these guys.

Sharpest Blade :: Sill Releases Animated Video For ‘Crazy 88’ Single

It looks like school is alive and in session this summer over at the College of Hip-Hop Knowledge (CHHK).  Case in point is the latest video offering from Sill, an animated affair for Crazy 88 that manages to pay homage to Kill Bill and Archer at the same time.  The track is an 808 and synth based affair that gives Sill a chance to go stream of consciousness with the flow to a very enjoyable degree.  Check out the video, leave a like and a comment, and share it around so that your friends can do the same.

Twin Hype :: ConductHer And Dream Puppy Drop ‘Vagabond’ Single

artworks-000552230268-rrqzel-t500x500

The awareness of self is something that all humans deal with, but for artists, that awareness can be as burdensome as it is insightful.  ConductHer, in anticipation of the release of her new project Gemini Season, decided to pair with Dream Puppy for an examination of this self-awareness in the form of Vagabond, an embrace of both sides of that dichotomy.  The track shows growth in the production, with a strength in the subdued and layered nature of the track that allows the lyrical honesty to shine properly.  If this is a taste of what Gemini Season will be about, I’m ready for a larger dose.  Check out the track, share it around, and support your local creatives!

Mixed Bag :: Sami Serrano Drops Heater In The Form Of ‘Piece Of Work’ Single

artworks-000547028919-57a0ey-t500x500

Whenever the homie Morgan tells the timeline that they should be hip to something, I make sure to listen, and his latest discovery is collaborator and songwrite Sami Serrano, an Austin-based champion of lo-fi music.  I instantly found myself digging through her Soundcloud account (I recommend you do the same), and the only reason I am sharing Piece Of Work is because it’s the latest track, but I implore you to not sleep on the other work she’s created.  Her beats are simple but powerful, the melodic arrangements are deceptively lush, and her lyrics are as equally playful and stark as her attitude and performance.  I’ll certainly be keeping an eye and an ear out for more to come from the Same Serrano camp.

Sacred Texts :: Tee Double Releases 20th Anniversary Edition Of ‘Lost Scriptures’

a2285128298_10

Until around my junior year of high school, I had this idea in my mind that musicians and actors were a completely different level of person than the average individual.  I’d been to a few arena-level concerts and seen major motion pictures, but nothing at the club  or indie level up to that point, and definitely nothing that featured anybody local.  That all changed right around the time I discovered Alien Records, once a mainstay of the Austin music scene… the location introduced me to local shows where underground acts that I was just becoming familiar with toured and played, and the shows were rich with local support.  This is how a number of Texas hip-hop acts, chief among them being Tee Double, made it to my radar.  He was already prolific at the time, and one of the first local LPs I ever purchased was his Lost Scriptures project, distributed by the California-based GoodVibe Recordings.  It was a trip owning a record by somebody I personally knew, and it’s still a trip 20 years later, even more so now that time has entered the equation.  Take a moment and check out this classic, add it to your collection if you don’t already own it, and spread it around so others can do the same!

World Building :: Curbside Jones Releases ‘Milk Tea Chronicles: Madsheepery’

a1391405624_10

I’ve had my eye on Curbside Jones for a minute now, and his level of creativity seems to be hitting an unparalleled stride recently.  After releasing a book and doing quite a bit of traveling, Jones has returned to the Milk Tea Chronicles with his latest installment, Madshepperey.  The narrative is continuing from the previous two releases, with our main characters trapped in a portal between our reality and the Candy Paint Kingdom, hence the slightly psychedelic and off-kilter nature of the beats and vocal performances.  The final result, however, is brilliantly trippy, and it definitely has me ready and waiting for the next installment.  Check it out, share it around, and drop a few bucks if you can to support Curbside Jones and his artistic endeavors.
