Radio Waves :: Soundfounder Drops Top Songs Of 2019 On His KUTX Show

soundfounder-dec-15

As if being half of the creative genius behind Exploded Drawing and the father of Exploded Records wasn’t enough, the homie soundfounder has continued to rise in 2019 by landing a radio show on the legendary KUTX as the first DJ focusing solely on electronic-based music.  He hit the ground running with a Flying Lotus in-studio interview, and every Saturday night since then, he’s blessed listeners with an eclectic mix of electronic and instrumental music from Texas and elsewhere.  As the year wrapped up, soundfounder provided an episode focused solely on his top music of 2019, with artists as varied and diverse as the aforementioned Flying LotusOpen Mike EagleKaytranadaThom Yorke, and even Texas artists like Khruangbin and The Vapor Caves making the cut.  Click on the pic above to check out the top tracks, and tune in every Saturday night for an audio blessing from soundfounder wherever you listen to KUTX.

Divine Shine :: Sungods Drop New Visual For ‘Huītzilōpōchtli’

When its all said and done, the homie Evolve may end up being one of Texas‘s most prolific artists in terms of output and crew affiliations.  Rather than do one-off collaborations with producers and artists, Evolve has a knack for throwing himself into deeper collaborations that result in the creation of supergroups and MC/producer tandems.  This time around, Evolve has connected with Ibe Hustles to form Sungods, a duo of MCs with distinct and direct styles used to bless listeners with knowledge and lyrical gems.  The two hooked up with producer eLiMenCe to bring forth Huītzilōpōchtli, and with the help of Not Just Entertainment, a music video has been created to accompany the moody track.  Definitely check it out, leave a like and a comment, and share it around for others to do the same!

Medicine Man :: Poolboi Blu Flips The ‘Sicko Mode’ Flip

You knew that poolboi blu had to sneak one more dart in on us before 2019 wrapped up.  This time around, rather than remixing something on the up and coming or underground side, poolboi blu goes for the gusto by taking one of the world’s biggest artist’s guest verse on one of the biggest songs of recent memory.  With astropoolboi blu puts a smoother edge on the ominous Drake verse from SICKO MODE, and the results are interesting.  With room to breathe provided by a bed of synths, Drake sounds more like an aged don than a rudeboy, all things to the mood flip courtesy of poolboi blu.  Check out the remix, cop it if you’ve got an extra buck, share it around for others to hear, and keep an ear out for it in mixes!

Instant Gratification :: Ratarue Embraces The Moment With ‘Tantrum Tapes’

artworks-000650945884-a8qtlm-t500x500

From the digital desk of Ratarue :

“Made with a cheap Drum Machine, a midi keyboard, and an old second hand Apple Laptop.  I was in a band and I borrowed the mulitrack recorder and made these four songs in a day.  It is unmixed and unmastered.  The quality is really bad but we all come from somewhere… Maybe, you will get the messages behind these songs.  Peace!”

Check this one out, as it’s definitely inspiring!

Painful Reality :: Ryan Darbonne Brings Darkness To Light Via ‘Died Screaming’ Visual

In the wake of Space Camp Death Squad splintering off into the exploration of their own creative ventures, it was cool to see Ryan Darbonne push forward as a director, and though we often spoke of music, I wondered what his next musical steps would be.  After the hilariously entertaining Dem Beach Boys video, it appeared obvious that his penchant for storytelling (both visually and narratively) would be a focus moving forward, but I had no warning or prior knowledge of his plans for the recently released Died Screaming.  What I do know, however, is that both the song and the video made a serious impact on me, and it feels like a 25th hour contender for video of the year.  There’s a lot going on in this one, and rather than hear me deep dive into this one, I recommend you check it out and share it on your own.  Definitely don’t forget to like it and leave a comment.  And, as always, support your local creatives.

Data Blend :: Chris Conde Drops ‘Conde Digital’ Visual

Hot off the heels of his FreeCember debut, Chris Conde has dropped a music video for Conde Digital, the title track off of the aforementioned Fake Four-released EP.  The video is a black and white, up front and personal collage of stock footage overlayed and juxtaposed against Conde performance footage.  The black and white aesthetic gives the whole thing a David Lynch-style feel, and thanks to the self-direction of Chris Conde and the editing of Scott Newman, the frentic call to action about finding personal freedom leaves images burned onto the brain.  Definitely a strong video to represent a strong project, so leave it a like and a comment, give it a share, and keep supporting indie creators!

Expensive Tastes :: Poolboi Blu Flips ‘Gucci’

Trying to guess what poolboi blu is going to remix next is like a little game… you never know where he may get the inspiration for his next flip.  I often wonder if San Marcos has a bit of a hive mind at times, or a collective sense, because a few weeks back the Beats Bingo crew and myself did a round that focused on clothing, which allowed me to sneak Gucci Gucci by Kreayshawn on the playlist.  It was that fact that caused me to chuckle when, a few weeks later, I clicked on a link that poolboi blu sent me, only to get hit with a remix of that very track.  Like all of the other remixes, this one is dope, and the added bonus of it being a guilty pleasure song makes it hit a little different.  Definitely check this one out, share it around for others to do the same, and keep checking in for poolboi blu in 2020, as I imagine he will keep the hits coming.

Critical Acclaim :: ChiefDoomsday Waxes Intellectual On Film In 2019

For those unaware, this dot.com is one of two blogs that I actively moderate and maintain.  The other is my film blog, the passion project that is DOOMonFILMAfter signing up for the brief dream-fulfilling program that was Moviepass in December of 2017, I decided that it would be the perfect opportunity to begin not only sharing my thoughts on movies from the past, but actively reviewing new releases as they premiered.  This project has turned into a full-blown dedicated journey, with 475 entries to date (and counting).  In hopes of keeping a tradition going, I release a year-end list with honorable mentions, films I consider top 10 worthy, and an official list of the 10 films that had the biggest impact on me as a viewer.  Check it out, follow my film blog if you’re in to that sort of thing, and enjoy your 2020!

Tough Talk :: Blackillac Keeps It Coming With ‘Hitman’

artworks-000637687300-3obiou-t500x500

As Blackillac continues their ascension, we’ve been blessed with a constant stream of solid music and video output from the duo of Zeale and Phranchyze.  Their latest hit (no pun intended) is the dark and mysterious Hitman, a banger produced by NA the Producer with plenty of moodiness and heaviness to back up the braggadocio coming live and direct from the talented MC pairing.  As a bit of a bonus, the two linked up with Dan2theL for a straight-forward, no-BS, well-shot music video :

As someone who has been there to watch both of these cats rise out of the Austin battle-rap scene into solo stardom, and eventually morph into financially and culturally viable artists, I am extremely proud of Zeale and Phranchyze for taking full advantage of a chance to live the dream.  I’m definitely staying tuned, as Blackillac is positioning themselves for a breakout year in 2020.

Headline News :: The Vapor Caves Stop By Austin360

________________________________________________

________________________________________________

If I were hard-pressed to name an artist of the year for Austin in 2019, I’d have to go ahead and bestow that honor to The Vapor Caves.  Through a combination of solid musical output and consistently entertaining promotional campaigns, the duo of Yadira Brown and BoomBaptist hit the ground running, with no intention of slowing down.  Austin360 recognized this recently, and as a result, The Vapor Caves were given the honor of Artist of the Month for December.  Here are live performances of Hurry Up and Wait and Be The Light from their debut album Feel Yourself, which you should definitely find on your favorite streaming service or digital storefront so that you can support at that ground-floor level.
