Razor’s Edge :: Leather Tuscadero Collectively Unleashes ‘Smokes, s’Go!’

There may be a greater distance between the collective members of Leather Tuscadeo these days, but that distance has not stopped them from making classic material.  Thanks to opportunities afforded by the creative think-tank known as Concuss, the members of Leather Tuscadero (producer Progeny, emcees Evolve and Barfly, and guru Rob Castro) have unleashed a beast with the hard-hitting EP Smokes, s’Go.  In just five songs, it is abundantly clear that the chemistry between the steadily attacking Evolve and the off-kilter approach of Barfly come together like Voltron over Progeny‘s boom-bap production.  The lyrical fodder is full of sharp wordplay, pop culture references and words of warning to those thinking that testing the collective is a safe move.  I definitely see this one getting repeated play and spins during my DJ sets.  Make sure to support your local creatives, wherever they may be, via likes, shares and monetary support.

Quick One :: Jeffrey Garcia And ‘Brian’s Used Cars Emporium’

Jeffrey Garcia is at it again (which implies he ever stops), and this time he brought Brian Kennemer back in the mix.  The duo takes a mocking swing at used car dealerships and their fast talking nature with Brian’s Used Cars Emporium, a highly stylized bit of fun in the vein of Tim & Eric.  The ending is pitch perfect after the brief bout of madness these two drag you through.  Super hilarious for sure.  Make sure to leave it a like, a comment, and share it around while you’re at it.

Pride Rhymes :: ConductHer Drops ‘Golden Gays’

Identity is a very key part to hip-hop, as anything less than the truth is glaringly obvious when it comes to the beats and rhymes.  Clearly, ConductHer (of ChurchCough) is completely aware of this fact.  She is currently deep in the trenches producing ChurchCough‘s upcoming release, but she took the time to drop Golden Gays, a statement on being honest to yourself, your feelings, and the people close to you when it comes to attraction.  ConductHer weaves her tale through the bombastic track, making sure to include very key points such as not falling into societal norms by default, trusting those feelings you may not understand, and avoiding looking for love in all the wrong places.  It’s been a pleasure watching ConductHer grow as a producer, songwriter and a person, and I look forward to more expressions of self and reflections on life from her.  Be sure to like the track if you’re feeling it, leave a comment, and share it around so others can benefit from shared truths.

Pull Up :: Poolboi Blu Drops Another Banger With ‘Lounge’

Summer is coming to a close, and if there were a shortlist for summer MVP, it’d be safe to say that poolboi blu would be somewhere near the top of it.  Be it solo singles, sincere mix volumes, or collaboration with Red Comet, the amount of work that the homie has put in these last few months cannot be denied.  The Red Comet collaboration series continues with lounge, a track written and produced by poolboi blu with engineering and cover art assists from Red Comet.  The track plays like a personal affirmation, with poolboi walking it like he’s talking it.  My man has always been fire with the tracks, but what really stands out on this one is the confidence that you can hear growing in his lyrics and his delivery.  It looks like poolboi blu the MC may slowly be stepping out of the shadows and into the spotlight… time will tell.  I’ll definitely be around to watch that spotlight action go down when it happens, and the smart ones out there will be right there with me.  Dig the track, share it around, and support your local creatives.

Spectrum Analysis :: Cunabear Shows Wonderful Range With ‘Yawning Towards Heaven!!!!’

For most artists and creatives, the last thing that you want to do is limit yourself in terms of expression.  As therapeutic as creating art and music can be, it is infinitely more rewarding when you allow yourself to expand beyond the limits imposed on you by others (or yourself).  Enter Savannah, Georgia-based cunabear, an artist who clearly understands and adheres to the practice of not limiting himself in terms of creative expression.  Yawning Towards Heaven!!!!, his latest release (produced by sp00ks), wonderfully shifts between abstract instrumentals, experimental boom-bap hip-hop, spoken word over sparse instrumentation, and a handful of solid posse cuts featuring labelmates such as SB the Moor, BigStupidIdiot, Gomec, the homie Virgil Wolfe, Creative Space Cadet, MugWampers and four_circles.  Most everything I’ve heard from BearTooth Collective has been good, but Yawning Towards Heaven!!!! plays very much like a deeply felt personal statement.  Props to cunabear for putting out a true gem for heads to take in.

Beautiful Wasteland :: Pleasure Venom Drops Pair Of Videos For ‘These Days’

Being cast for the upcoming indie short film I AM TX has been the gift that keeps on giving.  Not only did it enrich existing friendships, I’ve gotten lucky enough to make new ones that have been mutually beneficial.  Getting to know Audrey Campbell of Pleasure Venom has been one of the most inspirational results of that bit of luck.  Pleasure Venom was in the midst of a transition during the film’s production, with a goal of hitting a newly renewed stride in the months following.  Fast forward to now, and Campbell has a handful of music video director credits under her belt, including the recent These Days, which was premiered by AFROPUNK.  The video is a straight forward affair for the most part… dark field, beat down surroundings, immaculately dressed band giving you the musical business, and Campbell overseeing the entirety of events like a boss, plus cameos from Dawn Okoro, Asha Lanae, and Gerilyn Hayes.  Drummer Thomas Valles pulled double duty as well, both performing in and editing the video.  Things really get interesting in the alternate, VR version, however, an achievement in its own right :

Being literally surrounded by Pleasure Venom is definitely a memorable experience.  I look forward to supporting them further, sharing more of their work, and watching them rise to new heights.

Street Wise :: T$O, Eric Dingus And Grind Life Films Connect For ‘Nevermind’

The Austin hip-hop scene, since day one, has been a diverse one.  For every backpack lyricists or abstract thinker’s rapper, you’ll find a street-wise, school of hard knocks rapper counterpart.  Recently, the homie Dominican Jay posted a video for Nevermind from Austin-based T$0, and it definitely caught my attention in terms of that street vibe.  The prolific Eric Dingus provides the production assist for the onslaught of bars, and the always on point team at Grind Life Films dropped a heavy dose of dope aesthetic touches on straightforward performance and candid footage.  There’s no need for extra flare or thrills on this one… this is hard hitting product for heads that can deal with the real.  You know the drill… likes, comments, shares and support are always welcome to our local creatives.

Root Down :: Deano Coate Turns Travels in Guinea, West Africa To ‘Conakry’

Deano Cote, integral member to Fort Never, NGHT HCKLRS and Blastfamous USA, is quite the accomplished musician and interesting individual in his own right.  During a recent trip to Guinea, West Africa, Cote took the opportunity to gather field recordings that sparked his interest during the journey.  Upon his return to the states, he took these elements, and combined with his own original production, Conakry was born.  The project is an embrace of rhythm, the drums, naturally soulful expression and innovative methods of bridging sonic gaps.  This one is currently on Spotify and other streaming services, so I’d definitely suggest doing yourself a favor and checking it out if you’re looking for something new and eye-opening.

Looking Back :: Unusuals Reflects On Two Year Old Self-Titled Debut

‘This album celebrates its 2-years since its release date this upcoming August.

I wrote a majority of this album while going through some crazy times, & went back to rewrite it after my appendix surgery.

I feel y’all should check it out, I may be on a current hiatus from seriously listening to music & making music, but this album is something I hope one day people will understand its concept.

It was inspired by dark times & the study of the lust for human interaction.’

I wasn’t hip to this when he first dropped it, but Unusuals is definitely a completely different animal from If You’re Waiting Till We’re Dead, Don’t Bother Listening.  This project plays more like a Trent Reznor album than a hip-hop album, with deep sonic textures to match the deep emotional tones hit.  This album is definitely worth taking some time with.

Quick Fix :: Virgil Wolfe Collaborates With Big Lo For ‘Lovely To Look At’

Virgil Wolfe recently dropped a new track, a collaboration with producer Big Lo titled Lovely To Look At.   The beat is wonderfully off-kilter and lo-fi, with an eerie vocal sample and purposeful recording/aging distortion integrated into the track.  It’s a suitable soundscape for some of Wolfe‘s more cryptic lyrical fare.  His verse and delivery put me in the mindset of a Labyrinth-like situation, where I must solve the riddles Virgil Wolfe presents me before I am able to progress further.  My only real frustration with the song is that it is simply a single verse… an extended break and a second verse would have made this one pure gold.  Maybe a remix featuring Chief and TheDoomsdayDevice on a guest verse could solve that?  Regardless, here’s to Virgil Wolfe for continuing to put out both quantity and quality when it comes to tunage.
