After Juicy the Emissary dropped Yumy/Muny last week, the anticipation for the upcoming Komfort Food project hit hard nearly instantly. Before my post even saw the light of day the following Monday, however, the homie BoomBaptist swooped in with not only the Komfort Food cover art and merchandise pre-orders, but he dropped two additional tracks from the project : his classic track Toucan Wing, and an Elaquent track titled The Official. At this point, I’m definitely hype for the January 29th release of Komfort Food, and I hope you are too.
Are you ready for a super-collaboration from some of the dopest producers around? After hearing Juicy the Emissary‘s latest single, the super groovy Yumy/Muny, I know I am… it appears that this single is the opening salvo off of KomfortFood, an upcoming collaboration between Elaquent, BoomBaptist and Juicy the Emissary. I don’t know when it’s coming out, but I promise you I will be posting about it when it does, so keep your eyes and ears open. In the meanwhile, why don’t you check out this track, share it around, and drop Juicy a buck if you’ve got it?
Is BoomBaptist already working on a new project so close to the powerhouse that was Boom Shakalaka? Is he just messing around in the moment, similar to his recent release COVID The Earth? Did Boom mess around and find some gold while in a session and decide to bless us with a one-off track? I don’t have the answers, but that won’t stop me from sharing ZoomBaptist with everyone. Cop it if you can, share it around regardless, and get hip to BoomBaptist quick, because it feels like this is the beginning of a new wave of content.
As we hit the 2/3 range of one full year under the shadow of COVID-19, many of us are wondering if there will be a return to normality, and what that supposed new normal will look like. Many creatives, like BoomBaptist for example, are working on trying to keep things as normal as possible by finding inspiration in the madness. According to BoomBaptist, COVID The Earth is ‘a little surprise release comprised of songs inspired by this insane once in a lifetime experience we’ve all been facing through the pandemic.’ For those seeking some sort of sonic remedy to take their mind off of everything, I highly recommend this instrumental journey. Check it out, cop it if you can afford to, and spread it around for others to experience.
“This cassette photo is wildly substantial and I know she (Yadira Brown) won’t talk about it, so I will. This year she unearthed a wealth of knowledge about herself and her history, one of the items being a self-made cassette from when she was a child (I want to say 7 or 8 years old). The cassette was labeled Yadira: School is Cool and consisted of R&B freestyles she recorded on the tape. Her singing was advanced : she would indicate where backing vocals belonged, where nuances in the writing should change, and how the songs should have repeating sections (choruses). Topics ranged from needing love to being reunited with someone. Listening to it, I realized Yadira was always meant to be a writer/singer and at that age, she was so innately drawn to it, that she could imagine every section of the vocal, fully. In the spirit that is Yadira, she wanted to turn the attention away from herself and give the gift of a new album back to the world, however, she’s the actual gift and I’m honored to love her everyday. So, everyone who knows her, reach out to her today and jam this incredible mixtape!’
Austin-based record label Cream Dream Records, the collective brainchild of standout artists Bird Peterson and BoomBaptist, has been making a push for the ages in 2020. After using the label as a foundation for a solid run of Bird Peterson releases, the new year finds the roster expanding, and one of the promising additions is King Khary. His debut single, the hypnotic Stuck Off The Realness, uses a familiar sample from Prodigy of Mobb Deep as the main vocal element, but the lush and inspirational instrumental he surrounds the sample with re-contextualizes said ‘realness’ into a thing of beauty rather than a celebration of grittiness. Based on this small sample size, I can only imagine the sonic landscapes that King Khary has in store for us.

(iN)Sect Records is coming off of a major week. With an already power-packed roster on deck, the Austin-based label released a trio of debut projects. We previously covered the new BoomBaptist, and we will get to the Rob from Garden Street release, but the man of the day is Flobama, and the focus is on the immaculately produced debut project titled Warp Mode. The mix of electronic music and organic hip-hop elements connect well, with Flobama throwing shade of shade of slick track at the listener. The project flows very naturally, with any vocal samples managing to fit so well into the songs that it almost seems as if there are none present. Flobama has been flexing his skill for many years, and it’s good to see him find a label home with the brilliant beatsmiths as (iN)Sect Records. Check out the project, share it around, and cop it if you can afford to.
As April comes to a close, it seems that The Vapor Caves are also bringing Shelter in Caves! to a close as well. For what could be the final episode, BoomBaptist and Yadira Brown shared a new song or two, took dedication requests from the viewing audience, and even shared a recipe for a special margarita. While it is possible that the duo may extend their run into May, nothing concrete has been announced yet, but fingers crossed, we will continue to get content from the two in this format as long as shelter in place is a thing. Until then, check out the existing episodes, leave a like and a comment, and share it around for all to enjoy!
BoomBaptist has become a master of the album rollout over the past year or so, as the multi-faceted promotional campaign for The Vapor Caves proved. Boom put his creative genius to use once again for the release of Boom Shakalaka, his latest solo release on (iN)Sect Records. Anybody who knows Boom knows he loves basketball, with the legendary video game NBA Jams playing a large role in that love affair, so it makes complete sense that the aesthetic of Boom Shakalaka would be inspired by and centered around the game and its connected culture. The music speaks for itself, with Boom‘s signature swing and drum patterns nesting the multitude of samples perfectly. To crown the event, Boom even performed live from inside an NBA Jam cabinet :
Check it out all, cop some of that merch, and spread the word!
